船戸与一の小説を最後に読んだのは、かれこれ10年以上前のことだろうか？彼の描く世界は突然の死であり、それは主人公にも適用される。俺の中で、主人公＝死という、彼の小説の構図が受入れられなくなり読むのを止めた。そして久々に「虹の谷の五月」を読んだ。そして一気に読み終えた。何よりも俺をほっとさせたのは、強く生きる人間の希望と誇りが切実に描かれていたことである。成長する少年のすがたを見事に描いた作品である。子育て論として、R. B. パーカーの「初秋」も良いが、船戸流子育てもワイルドで良いのではないのだろうか。俺的には「山猫の夏」のラポーゾと、この本の主人公が何故かだぶってしまった。船戸作品を読んでない方も、怒濤の勢いで読むべし。

5.0 out of 5 stars 繊細な情緒と迫力の戦闘シーンで読ませる、少年の成長物語, 2007/2/17
フィリピン・セブ島で、闘鶏を生業とする祖父と暮らすトシオ。13歳から15歳の五月の出来事を描く。

フィリピンに特に興味はないし、歴史もほとんど知らないけれど、とても楽しく読めた。そして「人民軍」「マルコス」「アキノ」などについてもっと知りたい気持ちになる。それだけ、物語の魅力が強烈だということだろう。

クイーンのホセに対するアンビヴァレンスな想い。戦い続けるホセの強靭な信念。周囲に惑わされることなく、正しさを理解しているトシオとメグの清廉さ。ラストのじっちゃんの行動。
人々の真摯な気持ちは、読み手の心を強く揺さぶる。トニアやラモンの弱さでさえも。

また、暗殺者や誘拐犯に立ち向かうホセの戦いぶりは見事で、情緒的なものだけでなく、手に汗握る戦闘シーンでも読ませる。かっこよすぎるよ、ホセ！

唯一ひっかかるのが、トシオと彼をとりまく「主人公側」の人々が、あまりに善人すぎるところ。｢フランダースの犬」の主人公に対するのと同じイライラを感じてしまう。逆にそれ以外の人々は下劣で野卑な人間ばかり。「善」と「悪」とに二極していて、その構図はちょっと時代劇っぽい。

まあ、そんなこと、壮大な物語を前に、たいしたことじゃ全然ないんだけど。

下種のかんぐりで、その後のメグがどうなるのかが、気になる！

船戸　与一の本を全て読もうと考えたのは
この本との出会いが、きっかけでした。
人によっては「砂のクロニクル」がベストらしいのですが
私にとっては、この本と「猛き箱舟」が素敵と思える本でした。
ちなみに早く船戸本購入しないと続々と古本屋さんを頼らなければ
購入出来ない様なので全て読みたい方、御急ぎ下さい。

私は既に購入を迷っていた間に何冊か古本屋さんの御世話になりました。
船戸本は世情とシンクロする本多数です。お早く。眠れなくなります。
