連載が少年誌から青年誌へと移っても、シチュエーションがかわるだけでストーリーはワンパターン、しかも単純。連載当初はおもしろくても最後はストーリーが破綻。でも、何故か憎めないし、マンガも読んでしまう。ジャンプ世代の私にとって本宮ひろ志はそういうマンガ家だ。

それは、結局、“絶対無理だけどオレもこんなオトコになってみたい”という憧れみたいなものを表現しているからだと思う。だから、何度かの低迷期はあったにせよ、結局は私も含めた年齢を重ねたジャンプ世代達の支持を受けて復活を果たしているのだろう。

この作品は自伝である。だから、彼の生い立ち、マンガ家としての生活が綴られているのだが、どうしても、その私生活が彼の作品にオーバーラップしてしまう。そのまま彼のマンガになりそうな自伝だ。

そして、本書には彼のマンガを描くに当たっての裏話的なことやマンガに対する考え方についても、かなり筆が割かれているのだが、ネームをアシスタントにやらしてみたとか、絵が下手なら人に書いてもらえばいい（実際にそうなのだが）、と書いている。もしかして、近年の作品で本人が描いているのは登場人物の『眼』だけか？

うーん…マンガ家じゃなくて原作者だよなぁ。ほんとうにマンガ家を名乗っていいのかなぁ…。でも、本宮ひろ志だから、まあ、いいか…。ほんとに不思議なひとです。

これまでまんがは数多く読んできたが、その漫画が書かれた背景に思いが至ったことはなかった。この本では漫画家（というより本宮氏）がそれを作り上げていく過程と苦悩、それによって成長し、彼自身のマンガにおけるアイデンティティ（自分のプロデュューサーとしての能力）に目覚めていく過程がリアルに（正にマンガのように）描かれている。

売れるものを書くという彼のポリシーがこの自伝においても存分に発揮されており、読む側を次へ次へと誘う展開がすばらしかった。
