5.0 out of 5 stars 主人公演ずる女形はあまりに妖しく美しい, 2003/4/14
生まれながらに花を持ち、「演ずる」ために生まれてきた「立女形」。すべてが光のままにあると思われたとき、その身体が徐々に朽ちていく・・・。

美と才に秀で、右足を失いながらも凄絶なまでに芸の道をしがみつく立女形と、その行き様を愛し終生脇役を選ぶ「彼」の想いは、赤江瀑の「夜の藤十郎」（短編集「春喪祭」収録）を彷彿とさせながらもより冷徹な目で描かれています。それにしても主人公の演ずる女形は美しい。

皆川博子氏は「死の泉」で、そのスケールの大きさに驚いたのですが、本書でも主人公の生き様に留まらず、まだ庶民のものであった歌舞伎界の仕組みや幕末から明治に至る時代の流れをも描かれています。

弟子の三すじの視線で綴る、三世澤村田之助の生涯。
読みながら私は、彼らと共に江戸の町で生きている様に感じていました。私も三すじと同じく、田之助の放つ毒を含ませた美酒の様な魅力にあてられたのです。読み終えた今もずっと。
田之助は我儘で傲岸で、それでいて何よりも凜と美しい。足を失っても、尚。 猥雑で卑しいとされていた、庶民の最高の娯楽であった江戸の舞台。そこで生き、朽ちていく役者達。華やかさ、虚しさ、堕ちていく闇の中張り詰めた心。それでも未だ眩い舞台…。粋で色っぽくて哀しくて。 美しいものが壊れる姿は、切なさが加わる分更に美しく、自分でも意識していなかった残酷な心が惹かれてやまないのです。
簡潔に述べます。私はこの本を読みながら三すじであり、心底田之助に惚れ、江戸の舞台に取り憑かれてしまった様です。

文体、登場人物のキメ台詞、仕草の描写から容貌の形容にいたるまで
これでもか、ってくらい色っぽい小説でした。
皆川氏の作品、短編、中編あるけれど、あたしは長編がすき。
彼女のモチーフは、短編に詰め込むには大きすぎる時がある気がするから。
読後の粘りつくような陶酔感は、ホントさすがって感じです。
