　原告：ルイ・ドルレアン。
　被告：ジャンヌ・ドゥ・フランス。
　申し立て内容：婚姻の無効。

　原告をフランス王、被告をフランス王妃とした世紀の離婚裁判をテーマに書かれた作品。
　緻密に下調べされた中世フランスに神学、法学、そして裁判の様子は、読む者にリアルな情景をイメージさせる。

　主人公はナント地方の弁護士にして『伝説の男』、フランソワ。
　過去の彼は大学都カルチェ・ラタンきっての天才だったが、ある事件により大学を追われ、愛する女を失い、心身共に深く癒えない傷を負いながらその後の２０年の時を過ごしていた。

　その彼がある事情によりフランス王妃ジャンヌの依頼により、彼女の願いを叶えるために王妃の弁護を引き受ける。

　絶望的、と思われた状況を鮮!やかに覆し、突きつけられた刃を、即座に相手の咽喉元に突きつけるかの様な彼の弁舌には、読むものに臨場感と興奮を与える。
　

　歴史的な裁判劇を扱った作品、ということで、最初は硬い作品かな？とやや構えていたのだが、読み始めてすぐにその思考は消えて無くなった。
　(下世話かつ露骨な表現…が、バシバシ出てます。)
　悲運に彩られてばかりだった主人公にも、ラストには救いの兆しが訪れ、読了感も極めて良い作品。
　

　難しそうに思われがちな作品だけど、まずは読んでみて欲しい。
　思っていたイメージはきっとすぐに消えて、後には夢中になってのページめくりが待っているだろうから。

冒頭は些か退屈に感じて、ひょっとして本書を買ったのは失敗だったかとすら思えたのですが、しかし割とすぐに訪れました、胸のすくような場面が。それはまさに、鬱屈し、澱んでいた空気が解放に向かい、流れ出す瞬間であり、爽快感です。以降はもう、ページをめくる指が止まらなくて、最後まで一気に読んでしまいました。「時間を忘れて夢中になれる小説が読みたい」と思った方には、この本をお薦めします。

いやぁ、まったく期待を裏切ってとてもおもしろかったです。

佐藤さんという著者も、直木賞という賞のありがたみもぜんぜん知らずに、妻の勧めに従うままに読んだのですが、一気に読みきってしまいました。（おかげで仕事の締め切りに危うく遅れるところだった・・・）

本書は３章でなっていますが、第一章までは正直言って、まぁまぁ、といった感じなのでしたが、二章に入るなり、話のスピード感や話の切れ味ががらっとかわって一気にわくわくさせてくれます。それでもって、最後の終わり方も、気分爽快、といった感じでよかった。

最後の解説で、直木賞の選考委員の方が、「痛快！！」と評しておられましたが、俗物の私から見ても、「その通り！！」といいたくなるほどでした。
