全部で七編からなるホラーミステリー。
話によっては幻想小説といった方が相応しいものもありますが、
そのどれもが珠玉の出来映えです。
これだけのレベルの高さを誇った短編集など、そうはないでしょう。
作家の見識の深さと、主人公・猿渡の軽妙な語り口には
とにかく魅了されます。鳥肌が立つ程に。

キャラクターも実に魅力的。

怪異を愛する伯爵と、怪異に日常的に関わってしまう猿渡。
伯爵が隣にいてくれると、
ふらふらとあっち側に行ってしまいかける猿渡を
ちゃんと呼び戻してくれるので読んでいる側も非常に安心です。
まさにベストコンビ。

リアルな人物造形でありつつも、
変な生々しさがないのもまた良いです。
世界観とのバランスが非常によく取れています。

「水牛群」でストーリーはキレイに終わっているかのように
思えますが、このコンビの活躍はまだまだ見たいところです。

文庫も出ていますが、装幀の美しさと作者の後書きで
こちらの方を私はお勧めします。

ホラーだと思って手にしたけれどそれだけでは無くて新鮮だった。
思わず笑わされる軽妙なユーモアと、気味の悪さやおぞましさが
しっかり同居している。可笑しいのに気持ち悪いという複雑な読後感。
作者のほかの作品も読んでみたくなりました。

　まあオカルトだと言ってしまっても間違いではないとは思うが、そう簡単にラベルを貼ってしまいたくない内容になっている。
　別にリアリティがある、とかいうわけじゃなくて、「そんなばかな」というオチばっかりなのだが、これがいける。

　いける。

　読後感は、「恐怖」ではなく「不思議な話だなぁ」に近い。「めちゃくちゃ非現実的だよな」と思ってるにも関わらず、である。そしてその「不思議」に乗せて、やりきれなさや恐ろしさ、安堵などが連れてこられる。

　文体が特に特殊であるというわけではなく、ただムダがない。推理小説やホラーにありがちな、情景説明的なムダのなさではなく、読む者のイメージを喚起するのに過不足がない、ということだと言っておきたい。

　人間の心の奥に眠る狂気が、だとかそんな小難しいことを考えさせられるわけではない。ただ勝手な幻想世界を設定しておいて、そこに文章力だとかキャラクターだとか情景描写だとかで読者を納得させる。

　小説の世界に飲み込まれて、巻末でピュッと吐き出された感じだ。こんな体験はなかなかない。
