ノンフィクション作家の描いた小説第一弾。著者の海外紀行ものを読むとつくずく小説的だなと感じてきたが、こうして小説と銘打ったものを改めて読むと、逆にこれはノンフィクションではないかと奇妙な錯覚に陥る。主人公である旅人の視点が旅ものにおける「私ー藤原新也」と酷似しているのがその要因だろうが、ところどころにテーマを暗示ではなく提示してしまうシーンが散見され、それが小説的感興を削いでいるようにも感じられる。
しかし冬のアイルランドの詩的な情景、あるいは登場人物の微細な息づかいなど、それぞれのシーンを空気感までリアルに描き出す筆致は見事のひと言。美しい映像に詩の断片を織り込んだような、静かで味わい深い作品であることに間違いはない。

地味な本である。でも、こんな人生を送りたいって思う自分を、すごく感じる。「何かに繋がっている」ということを、時に、強く求めたくなる。「自分」として生きていく中で、それは見えなくてもいい。見えないものであるからこそ、存在していることを強く感じられる一瞬があるのではないだろうか。行き詰まると手にしたくなる本、それが「物語」だとしても・・
