犯人を推理して読むと、案外早く真相に気付いてしまうかもしれません。そして、「犯人を当てること」＝推理小説だという人には、かなり物足りないでしょう。しかし、それ以外のところでこれはやられた、と思います。
掟破りという人もあるかもしれませんが、それぐらいならクリスティもやっているので問題ないと思います。
タイトルの「R.P.G．」について、清水氏の解説が、やや的外れに思えました。

どう「読むか」で、評価が大きく二分される作品だと思います。

いわゆる「推理小説」としてみたら、
先読みがあまりに簡単すぎる点で★１つか２つ。
逆に単純な読み物としてみたら、展開が淡々として起伏にとぼしいものの、
あの分量で無駄なく綺麗にまとまっているので★３つか４つといったところです。

余談ですが『クロスファイア』『模倣犯』を
読んでいると、少しニヤリとできるかもしれません。

清潔・簡潔でシンパシーを誘う筆致、ストーリーテリング、キャラクターの魅力。はずれのない作家としてもっとも愛する作家である。ＳＦ、社会派ミステリー、コミカルミステリー、時代小説、短編にも他には見られない才能を持つ人と認識していたが、トリックものは不得手だったか。模倣犯のあととしてはこの軽さが適当だったかと思う一遍。この作家らしくなく登場人物に感情移入が出来ない。また、作者自身、それを意図して書いている気もする。この作家の場合どうしても「火車」とひき比べてしまう。彼女自身に自著の「火車」を越える本を書いて欲しいと思うのはきつい注文であろうか。非常にこの作家を愛しまた期待するものとしてあえて辛い点をつける。
