読んだ本の中でこの本を越えるものはあるのだろうか？
よんでから非常に山に興味を持った作品。
長いかもしれないが、十分に読み応えあり。
絶対に読むべし！！

私は谷口ジローのマンガのファンなので、この小説の存在を知ったのは彼のマンガである。（谷口ジローは、著者の「餓狼伝」をマンガ化した作家である。著者は彼のことをプロボクサー・アマレスラー・プロレスラーの肉体の違いを明確に描き分ける作家と絶賛している）だから、読む前からストーリーは知っていた。しかし、この作品はそれでも面白い。ストーリーがわかっていても、読む者（自分）をその世界に引きずり込んでしまう文章力、短い文章が延々と続く心理描写、極限に生きる男の圧倒的な迫力が迫ってくる。

山を舞台とした作品なので、絵で表現できる（それを表現する実力のある谷口ジローの）マンガの方がいい作品なのかと思っていた。確かにエベレストをはじめとする山々、それを登る羽生や深町の描写は一目でわかるマンガの方がいい。しかし、登場人物の心の揺れを細かく表現する描写は、やはり文章を武器とする（優れた）小説の世界のものであり、マンガの敵わない部分である。

マンガも小説も読んだ私の結論は、どちらかだけを読むだけではもったいないということである。マンガしか読んでいない人は小説を、小説しか読んでいない人はマンガを是非読んで欲しい。両方読むことで両方の作品の世界が広がるに違いない。

著者があとがきで、自画自賛ともいえる文章を書いてしまったのもわかるような気がする、本当に素晴らしい作品だ。

そんなことはどうでもいい

「俺がいるから・・・」、それで充分だ

人生論・書評なんか不要
ただ読めばいい
