こいつはおもしろい。十五世紀のフランスなんて、まったく想像つかないとっつきにくい世界だと思っていたが、読み出したらもう止められなくなってしまった。

　百年戦争とあのジャンヌ・ダルクの登場である。その上、かの「青髭」ジル・ド・レもお出ましとあって、波乱万丈の物語は休む間もなくつき進んでゆくのだ。作者は、フランスの歴史を得意とするだけに、この時代をまるで匂うように描きだしてみせた。

　展開は、まだ未熟なところもありスムーズではないのだが、それを補ってあまりある骨太の物語だった。主人公のピエールも根っからのヒーローではなく、人間としての弱さや、まっとうさに欠けるところがあり、またそれがよい味を出していて、この人物が死ぬところは絶対見たくないと思ってしまったくらいだった。

　それにしても夢のある話だ。読んでいて胸のすく思いを味わった。

ジャンヌ・ダルクの話といえば、オルレアンの解放後、味方フランスに裏切られ、最終的に火刑に処せられてしまう。そういう彼女の境遇に、いつもやり切れない思いを抱いていました。でも、この本のジャンヌは生きていた！ 残忍な拷問や様々な仕打ちから解放されたジャンヌの姿に 救われる思いがしました。

出会った時からお互いに何かを感じ合い、惹かれあっていたピエールとジャンヌ。２人の感情の揺れの描写あり、略奪シーンの記述ありで、引き込まれるように読破してしまいました。

フランスの聖女ジャンヌダルクと主人公を中心とし、さまざまな男女が明るく、生活感あふれ、時には激情に流され、戦乱の時代を駆けていきます。そして物語はラ・ピュセル処刑場へ！
教科書とは違う世界がここにあります。でもひょってして本当は？
最後の１ページまでひきつけられた本でした。
