連作「光の帝国」は常に光があった。どんなに辛い描写があってもだ…。つまりはダークな部分が弱かったと思う。
常野一族の中にもダークな一面があっても良いと思います。何故、評価が低いかというとみんな「光の帝国」を意識しているからでしょうか?
「光の帝国」に登場した春田一家ような常野一族がいる一方で逆に役割を次第になくし、淘汰されていった一族の人々がいるのではないでしょうか?

全体的に黒いイメージの作品です。

蒲公英草子のような静かな暖かさはありませんが、これはこれで面白かったです。

人間の「負の部分」が嫌いじゃない人は楽しめると思います。

　恩田陸さんの常野物語の第三弾で、文庫最新刊になります。　
　人にまぎれて生きる常野の一族は、その特殊な能力により人々の間にひそむ「何か」を相手に裏返したり裏返されたりという人知れず戦いを太古から続けてきました。一族同士の血の禁忌を避け、できるだけ固まらずに、できるだけ普通の人々と結婚し、子供を為し、広がっていました。
　この話も、そうした一族の、しかも圧倒的な力をもつ、父と母、タブーを破ってでも一緒になった二人の血をひく最強の申し子として生まれた女性が主人公のお話です。小さい頃に敵に「裏返されて」いなくなった父親、二人きりの家族だった母が敵にやられたのか意識不明の昏睡状態になった時、彼女ははじめて一族と連絡を取ろうとするところから物語は始まります。。。。
　あらすじ・ネタバレで言えば、書けるのはここまで、後は読んでいただいての皆様の反応待ちですが、、、正直この巻は救いがないというか、混沌としているというか、自己中心的な人ばかりというか、読んでいてとても苦しい話でした。一族の中でも新しい能力の持ち主たちとして「洗濯屋」が出てきたり、「つつむ」という新概念も出てくるんですが、なんででしょう、人々をまもる精神性の高い一族と見えてきた常野の一族が急に変なことになってしまったような気がします。それは敵の一族たちの明らかになった事のせいでもあるんでしょうが、なんでだろう、すっきりしませんでした。
　前作の「蒲公英草紙」、或いはこの「エンド・ゲーム」の前段にあたる「光の帝国」収録の「オセロゲーム」と比べると、ちょっと残念な感じでしょうか。常野一族にヒロイックなもの、聖人的なものを求めすぎていたのかも知れませんが、個人的には今ひとつ。
　ただし、一族が全員光の側のものであったり、聖人であるはずもなく、異端児達の物語として読めばそれはそれでサイコサスペンスものとしてありだとは思います。作品としての評価が低いのは個人的な好みかも知れません。

この本で、常野物語が一気に俗っぽくなってしまったと感じました。各々の勝手な計算と行動ばかり。常野とは言っても所詮は人間でしたか、とちょっと残念に思います。
