ここまで局地的に敗北を喫したことはあったものの、大きな喪失感を伴う敗北はなかった梁山泊軍。
それが、青蓮寺の大規模な両面攻勢の前に双頭山があわや陥落寸前に。
朱仝の命をかけた超人的なふんばりで陥落は免れたものの、大敗北を喫した。
読み進めていくうちに、今後の梁山泊軍の戦いが困難を極めていくことを予想させる巻と言えます。

ここまで、いいところまでいっても勝利を遂げられない官軍は
軍の質の底上げをはかる。
もともと数量で圧倒する官軍は、質の上がった軍を用いて多角的な
攻めに転じる。
梁山泊に大打撃を与えるものの、ここでも完全なる勝利を得られない官軍。
地力とともに反撃する官軍に震撼する白虎の章。
目が離せません。

　愚かな皇帝のもとで腐りきった宋という国と、それと争う百八人の英傑たちの集う梁山泊との物語もクライマックスに向け、戦闘は激化の一途を辿り続けます。
　最初の頃は地下に潜伏しての秘密活動だったものが、やがて宋という国への昂然たる叛徒たちの活動となり、この巻あたりになるとすでに内乱に近い状態まで戦いは激化しており、それに従って戦闘のほうも国をあげての大軍が出動、迎え撃つ梁山泊の叛徒たちも反乱軍として各方面の総力戦を繰り広げるというレベルになっています。一つの土地や寨を守るだけではなくいくつかの場所で同時に起こる大軍のぶつかり合いは、ときに何千という兵が死んでいきます。またその中で、国を相手ということで物量作戦人海戦術に対抗するために、やむなく或いは読み負けの部分で梁山泊は貴重な指揮官クラスの戦力を一人、また一人と失っていきます。いくらでも兵隊を補充できる国軍と違って、反乱軍に身を投じる民衆は増えこそすれ、武力・指揮能力に卓越した人材がなかなか補充できない梁山泊にとってこれは非常に厳しい戦いです。
　国への想い、民への想い、自らの志、そして何より闘う意志の力で国軍を相手にひけを取らないものの、主要人物クラスの少なさから、指揮官クラスの主要人物が一人でもかけると大きな痛手となる梁山泊にとっては、国を打倒するために絶対必要な勢力拡大とそのかわりに受けなければならない痛みの大きさは大きなジレンマとなっていきます。
　物語の中では直接語られませんが、両軍あわせての戦争の続行での戦死者や農業の停滞での被害も梁山泊側からすれば心痛む状態になっているでしょう。
　しかし、降伏のあろうはずもなく、戦闘を行い続けている以上、指揮官の死は逃れがたく、この巻でも水滸伝の好漢108人のうちの何人かが壮絶な最後を遂げます。未読の人のために名は挙げれませんが、彼らが、と思うメンバーまでもが戦死します。皆があとに残る男たちの為に、未来の為に、散っていきます。自分の信じるものの為に、戦う事、命を捨てる事をいとわない、むしろ当たり前のようにそれを受け入れていく男たちはただただかっこ良いの一言に尽きます。もちろん今現在ま世の中ではそういう事は受け入れられないし、賛美できないものでしょうけれど、物語として、また当時の国というものを考えると文句なくかっこよい男の生き様です。
　既にご存知の方も多いでしょうが、本家の中国版の水滸伝ではここまでたくさん物語の中で梁山泊の百八星は死にません。というより、全員が一同に会する有名なシーンまでは誰一人として死にません。しかし、この北方版では序盤からどんどん死ぬし、それが意味をもって繋がってゆきます。北方謙三版「水滸伝」、「三国志」も傑作でしたが、こちらも傑作です。是非読んで欲しい一冊です。
