1953年京都市生まれ。早稲田大学卒業後、松竹入社。歌舞伎の企画・製作に携わる。97年、『東洲しゃらくさし』でデビュー。同年、『仲蔵狂乱』で第8回時代小説大賞を受賞。2007年、『吉原手引草』で第137回直木賞受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

集英社文庫のナツイチ、2008夏の一冊に選ばれていました。
集英社のWEBには、BOOKNAVI　書籍試し読みのサイトがあり、
見出しの１ページ程度の本文が掲載されています。
神田川を１７歳の瑞江が通っていく。
弟の平左衛門は家に残っている。
そんな出だしが分かる。
家ではないものはなんだろう。

おもしろかったです。
なじみの薄い大名の奥むきという世界を、主人公の少女と同じ、新参者で何もわからないという視線で見て行けるので、スムースに物語に乗って行けます。
人物表と見取り図がはいっているのも、親切。人物表は、もうちょっと詳しいともっと親切？
話の展開の仕方が自然で、巧みに伏線が張ってあります。最後にそれらを一気にまとめ上げつつ、緊迫したサスペンスを盛り上げる手際は、実に見事です。

タイトルにあるように、「家」そして「血」の問題がいろいろと登場します。
主人公の瑞江の家は、同心の家ですが、実は血の繋がりのない父母姉弟が一緒に暮らしています。
荻野沢之丞は、名のある女形ですが子供がいず、その「家」の継承の問題を抱えています。
瑞江が方向に上がった大名屋敷でも、その跡継ぎの問題が上がっています。
こうした「家」の問題と共に登場するのが、「女性」の問題です。この本の中には、「道具としての女性」という言葉も出てきます。でも、作者はそうした言葉とは裏腹に主人公の瑞江に、実の母浦尾と共に、一人の女性として、一人の人間としての活躍をさせています。二人は、「道具としての女性」たちをやっつけます。
この本はミステリー作品ですが、こうしたはっきりとしたテーマを持った作品です。しかも、舞台となる大名屋敷の奥御殿を巧みに使って、それぞれの立場にある女性たちを見事に描き分けています。事件に至るまでの描き方もいいですが、やはり、ラストのクライマックスが素晴らしいと思います。そのまま映像化できるのではないかと思われるほど見事な描写です。
素晴らしい作品でした。
