順調に梁山泊一派が足場を固めていくかに見えて、３巻の終わりにはあっと驚く展開が。
読んでいる側が信じたくないような衝撃的な展開ながら、それでも物語は進んでゆきます。
正直この物語は描写される場面場面がすべてスピード感を持って展開されているため、ほんのわずかな時間読むだけでも引き込まれてしまいます。

少華山、二竜山、桃花山と梁山泊。
展開は、点からひとつの線となって広がります。
魯智深は、これを面に広げる為に北の大地に赴きます。
ちょっと、不器用な楊志もここからが正念場。
史進の再教育や、武松の復活と登場人物が
入れ替わってゆきます。

魯智深は、如何に？
とうとう、追われる身となってしまった宋江はどうなるのか？

またまた次巻が楽しみです。

歴史小説でふつうの作家が描くことを、北方謙三はまったく描きません。時代背景の説明もしない。服装や街並みの描写もしない。ただ、ひたすら、人間を描く。その人物がどういう動きをして、なにを考えているのか、それだけに筆を割いてゆきます。おそらく、調べたことの９９％は、捨てているのではないでしょうか。描かなくても大丈夫であることを確かめるために、調べている。
「教科書を読んだり、映画を観れば代わりがきくようなことは描かないよ。おれは小説じゃなきゃ描けないことしか描かないんだ」という、熱い叫びが聞こえて来るようです。とんでもない剛腕です。読みやすいのに、ものすごく濃い内容です。
