北方謙三氏が、「三国志」に続き、中国古典を題材に描いた大河小説の第２弾で、司馬遼太郎賞も受賞した作品です。
あらすじは、民衆の困窮をよそに、役人たちが腐敗しきった宋末期、その事態を憂いた男たちが、敢然と、官軍に立ち向かうものです。特徴としては、登場する男たちが、どれも魅力一杯なこと。この本を手に取られた方は、恐らく、その中の誰か一人には感情移入してしまい、「頑張れ」と応援したくなるでしょう。また、中国ならではのスケールの大きさも魅力の一つでしょうか。
かの、北上次郎氏が、「本の雑誌」でも大絶賛した痛快無比な物語で、通勤途中に読んでも、日常の些細なことが忘れられること請け合いの本です。歴史本、ハードボイルド何れの好きな方でも、楽しめると思います。多くの方にお奨めのシリーズです。

本を読んで、まずい、と思った。この本は全１９巻、関連本を含めると、２０数巻になる。また長い付き合いを始めなくてはならない。
負けることが分かっている物語。一人ひとりのキャラがあまりにも立っている。著者北方謙三は既存の水滸伝の話をいったん解体し、キャラの性格も変え、新たなキャラも増やし、（１０８の玉の欠片など最初から登場もせず）、事態考証もしっかりとして、見事な漢（おとこ）たちの物語を作っている気がした。

例えば、豹子頭林冲である。
もと禁軍（皇帝軍）の武術師範代。謀反の疑いで獄中に入れられている間に高きゅうに慰み者にされた妻は自害する。地獄のような獄の中で林冲は思う。
「いまになって、はっきり分かる。自分は、張藍を愛していたのだ。それを張藍に伝えることが、もうできなかった。志がなんだ。そういう時は思う。志などというものがあったために、張藍への愛をついに自覚することがなかった。張藍が死んでからの自覚など、自覚ではないのた。」（ｐ１６１）
将来の梁山泊のリーダー宋江と密同盟を結んでいた林冲は、妻とのラブラブは仮の姿なのだと思い込んでいた。槍の腕は天下一だが、精神的な切なさと弱さを併せ持つ。このときの経験が林冲を陰のある、しかし魅力的な漢にする。

彼らの負けざまを楽しもう。

本当に純粋で奇麗で、強い男達に、ついほれぼれしてしまう。
’もてる男’とか’ちょい悪’とか、そんな下らないものを追ってないで、男は黙ってこの本を読むべき。
「三国志」に続き、一生忘れることのできない人生の教科書になりそうです。
