秋生を取り巻く9人の立場から語られる恋愛がメインの小説で、
単純に恋愛小説とは言えない内容。。
最初はわかりにくいが、慣れればなんとかついていける

秋生が亡くなり、
その情報が伝えていくことによって、
そしてその葬儀にそれぞれの人物がかかわることによって、
つまり秋生の死がきっかけとなって、
それぞれが人生の転機となるような再開・出会いを果たしていく。

秋生と繋がりを持っていた人達が秋生が関係ないところで巡り会う展開には何か
サスペンスめいたものを感じさせる。

解説によると、どうやらあの「肩ごしの恋人」と執筆時期がかさなっているとのこと。
はっきりいってかなり色合いが違う作品である。この二冊だけ読めば同じ作家と
は思えないだろう。まあその二作品の隙間は他の作品が埋めてくれるだろうが。

多くの男女を惹きつけてやまない秋生が関わったにしては、
女たちの誰もに魅力が感じられなかった。
立場や職業は違えど、自分の感情を素直に表現できない、
受け身で小利口な、元お嬢様タイプの女ばかり。
もっとそれぞれを差別化して、様々なタイプの女たちの
生き方を描いてほしかった。

唯一、じゅん子だけはユニークな存在で、彼女のエピソードが
一番おもしろかったが、秋生と関係があったわけでもない彼女の
話がなぜこんなに登場するのか意味不明。

高瀬秋生と同級生であったり、彼女であったり、家族同士の付き合いであったりと
付き合いの深さは違えども、関係した5人の女性たちの生活が、
秋生の突然の死により緩やかに変化していきます。

30代半ばならあるであろうそれぞれの立場が象徴的です。
この5人の女性に共通するのは、それまでの自分の人生を、自分で選んでこなかったこと。
誰かに依存していたことです。

秋生は生きて登場することはありませんが、登場人物の回想で秋生の言葉や行動が語られていきます。
そしてそれぞれの登場人物の周りで起こる様々な出来事を通して、女性たちは自分たちの足で歩き始めます。

その選択は読者によって賛否の分かれるところかもしれませんが、自分の責任のうえで選択している潔さを感じます。
