主人公の照美（てるみ）は１６歳のプロのお縫い子だ。
お縫い子だったら自分の店を持っているか、あるいは仕立て屋に勤めていると考えるのが普通だろうが、彼女はどちらでもない。
流しのお縫い子なのである。
注文主の家に住み込んで、服を仕立てる。
そんなお縫い子がこの世に存在するとは思えないけれど、小説だからちっともかまわないし、うそこだとは思えない現実感があった。
〜〜〜〜〜〜
遠い島からひとり上京したテルミーは、キャバクラのホステスになった。
本当はお縫い子でやっていきたいが、急に「営業」を始めるのはむずかしい。
ひとまず住み込みのホステスでやっていこう。
その最初の夜に、テルミーは女装の歌手シナイに一目惚れをした。
シナイは女には興味を持たない男だったが、彼のステージ衣装がダサイと批判したテルミーに興味をもち、しばらくウチに住んだらいいよと言ってくれた。
恋する男と一緒に暮らしながら、まったく興味を持ってもらえない悲しさに身もだえするテルミー。
ある日、シナイからドレスを作って欲しいと注文があった。

１２９回芥川賞にノミネートされた作品だ。
お縫い子テルミーに続いて、「オテルモル」「マルコの夢」も芥川賞にノミネートされている。
目のつけどころが面白い。　変なことを考える人だなぁと思いながら、いつのまにか物語に引き込まれてしまうのだ。
９０ページに満たない短い小説なのに、長い小説を読み終わった充実感があった。

5.0 out of 5 stars 若いけど、どっこい生きてる職業小説集, 2008/11/9
　テルミーはいい。名前の由来もいいけど（読んでください）。若いのにプロで、女で「流し」で「家がない」から「あんなこと」や「こんなこと」もあるけど、どっこい生きて仕事をしている。ファミレスで自分のためのドレスを作っているシーンはとても良い。田舎から歌舞伎町へ出てきた「女性の自立物語」。

　同時収録の『ABARE・DAIKO』は小学校五年生のコマが、アルバイトをする話で、これも広義の「職業小説」か。実は一年タブっていて一つ年上のオッチンとはいい友達。子供の悩みは深く、それでも笑いを忘れずに、どっこい生きている。

　二つの話を読むと、がんばって働こうという元気が出てくる。ビタミンみたいな小説。

奇想天外な想像力は他の誰にもない彼女だけのものだが、まだ登場人物一人一人の生き様に十分血が通っていないような感じがしてしまう。この直後に編まれたアンソロジー『コイノカオリ』の一遍がとてもよかったので次の作品に期待したい。
