確かに、過去の椎名作品と比べたら、パワーが無くなったといえるかもしれない。しかし、もともと作者は非常に繊細な面を持っている人であると思うし、初期の頃から椎名作品を読んできた者としては、老いや時の流れをうまく表現したなんとも言えない作品であると思う。悪さもした、冒険もした。喧嘩もしたし酒も飲んだ。恋もした。がむしゃらにも働いた。何かに夢中にもなった。死んでしまった友達もいる。病気にもなった。挫折もした。それでも新しい大切な何かを見つけながら歩き続けている。そして次の世代が育っていくのをやさしく見守っている。若い世代には解り難いかもしれませんが、時とともに全てが移り変わっていっても、やはりそこにあるのは、素晴らしきかな人生ですよ。

　旅多き多忙な毎日。他のエッセイで書かれている旅の話を背景にしながら、その中で離れた地でそれぞれのライフスタイルで暮らす家族の、根本の所の絆がはっきり見える作品だと私は感じました。
　椎名さんも昔のようなパワーは無くなってきているかもしれませんし、年齢とともに感じ方も色々変わってくるのでしょうが、かえっていく"場所"は物理的な場所ではなく、心の中に昔と変わらずにあるものだと感じ、なんとなく安心感を覚えました。

評価が難しい本です。

椎名氏の旅行記物や、｢岳物語｣のような私小説を期待して読むと、かなり欲求不満が残ると思います。
しかし、椎名氏の本をデビュー当時から読んでいるような年代の人、それなりに年を重ねた人にとっては、共感できるものがあると思います。
若いころほどの勢いはなく、それが少し切なく、それでいて暖かい”初老”の毎日を書き連ねた日記のような本です。

椎名誠も年を取ったなと感じ、彼の本を青春時代に読み漁った自分も同じように年を取ったのだな、と感じさせる本です。
