「空と無我―仏教の言語観」定方 晟 (講談社現代新書)を読んだ時のような爽快感はなかった。 私には、論旨展開が緩い（なかなか進まない）ように感じた。印象に残る目新しい指摘もなかった。

ブッダはヤソーダラーとラーフラを捨てて出家する。これを序文で現代の「子捨て、親捨て」と同一視していますが、それは全然違う話でしょう。何を言っているのやら。序文はやたらに改行でページ数を稼ぎ、文学的な臭い文章で誤魔化しています。中盤の考察もひどい。ラーフラとアーナンダの関係を推定していますが、根拠なく「〜だったのではないだろうか」の連発。もちろん、文献がないところだから文献に基づいた考察ができないところではありますが。ブッダの思想の解説も（最古層ではなく）古層の文献からの引用で、このあたりの文献批判はちゃんと行われたのか、不安にもなります。
山折先生ほど鋭かった方も老いるのだなあ、というのが正直な結論です。

具体的な証拠と論理的な展開によって題名になっている「ブッダはなぜ子を捨てたのか」を書いた論文形式の書籍化と思ったら全く違っていた。

まず何が言いたいのか全く分からない。そしてブッダが子を捨てた理由などの部分は全て筆者の証拠が一切無い想像、いや妄想。哲学書だとしても「〜であろう」「〜だと思う」という語尾を連発して勝手に結論を付けても納得が出来ない。

また、後半になると題名とは全く関係の無い現代の話だけが紹介されている。筆者はこの章を重点的に書きたかったのであろうと思うが、それならば書名を変えるなりして欲しかった。

哲学書として読むのならば別の判断が出来るであろうが、書名の理由を明かしている論文だと思って買った人間としては最低レベルの本であった。
