「ニュース２３」のキャスターである筑紫哲也が主にそのテレビ番組と彼自身の関わりを書いた本である。オウムビデオ事件に関し彼が「TBSは死んだ」と発言した番組を私は見ていたが、このような発言は「ニュースステーション」では聴くことが出来ないだろうと思った。「ニュースステーション」はショーであるが「ニュース２３」はやはりニュース番組だからだ。筑紫はそのジャーナリストの立場から「TBSは死んだ」発言の意味や裏事情、「多事争論」導入のいきさつ、クリントン大統領のTBS訪問時のやりとり、小泉首相論、などを分かりやすく展開している。
放送ではよく「噛む」彼だが、この本は論旨が平易で、しかも背骨が通っている感じである。お勧め出来る本である。

「仕事は段取りが８割」昔からよく言われる言葉であるが、本書もオンエアーの焼き直しではなく、「段取り」について主として書かれている。毎日の事件の中で、一つ一つを掘り下げて書くには、新書１冊では足りなすぎるのは想像に難しくないので、その主テーマは新書の趣旨にのっとっており、また面白い。ジャーナリストやキャスターとして他の新聞記者等もよく言うセリフの一つに「個人的見解を述べたり書いたりしているのではなく、その判断は読者しだいだ」というのがある。　「多事総論」はそれを破るTV的にも珍しいコーナーだが、この放送後の（抗議の電話が多い）コメントこそが、著者と「ニュース２３」の姿勢を具現化しており、本書も含めて７０になっても老害に起因するブレはないといえよう。

　ジャーナリズムの場にあって「何を」、「いかに」伝えるかを真摯に考えている筆者の姿勢に非常に共感を感じた。高いところから「ジャーナリズムとは何か」を高邁に語るのではなく、あくまでも自らの番組の裏話を通して自らのジャーナリズム観を語っている点も好感が持てる。マスコミ志望者だけでなく、日常的にテレビを見ている人におすすめである。テレビを作っている人間が何を考えて作っているのかを知るために。
