フランス革命期の女性史的な一冊をナポレオンを中心にまとめた
なかなかの良書。
ナポレオンにジョセフィーヌやマリー･ルイーズといえば
ありがちな題材だが、ただのエピソード紹介に終わっていないところが
面白い。
それよりも、革命期の女性群像が生き生きとしていて
興味をそそられる。
若いころのナポレオンが彼女らに振り回されていというのも

面白い話だ。

　著者は仏文学者。フランス革命や、フランス史上の女性たちにまつわる著作が多い。
　本書は、ナポレオンの周辺の女性たちを取り上げている。ジョゼフィーヌとマリー・ルイーズという２人の妻、母親、愛人たち。そして彼女らがナポレオンに及ぼした影響を論じていくのである。母親については、本書を読むまでまったく知らなかったのだが、この人は傑物だ。
　全体的には、ナポレオンの生涯をたどりつつ、その政策や人生に２人の妻が与えたインパクトを検証していくというもの。かなり大胆な推測が混じっており、歴史家としては苦笑いするしかない箇所も多いが、確かに「ありそう」な話ばかりだ。
　ナポレオン法典との関係も論じられており、興味深い。
