これは「性同一障害」を持つ人々のアイデンティティ獲得への苦闘と、医療関係者・精神科医などの取り組みを記録したルポルタージュである。著者の視点はあくまで公平で、性同一障害が社会的に認知されるとともに、インターセックスに対する偏見は等閑にされる恐れがあることにも言及している。また、このような問題に関しては、欧米のほうが法的には進んでいるが、市民意識のレベルでは日本のほうにまだ許容性があるのではないかとも言う。なるほどそうかも知れないが、この件はまた別に論じられるべき問題だろう。また、これまで闇で性転換手術を施してきた医療関係者もカミングアウトする必要があるとも言うが、そのためには彼らが訴追排斥されないような法的保護が整備されなければならないはずだ。

　尚本書の出版年は2000年であるから、「性同一性障害者の性別の取扱いの特例法」が成立・適用（平成16年7月）された現在では、戸籍に関する記述のみが古く、その部分は改訂されなければならない。

知らないということは、自分の意識しないところで差別を引き起こしてしまいます。メディアの中だけでなく、私たちの中でも、比較的多く話題に出てくるホモセクシュアルやトランスヴェスタイトの方に対して、（この本にはもっといろんな性のありかたの名称が紹介されています。）でのものすごく根強い拒否感が存在することを、日常の何気ない会話のなかからでもこの本を読んでから気づくようになりました。多くの人がこの本をよんで、私たちの気づかないでいた問題に目を向けて、もっと性について考えて欲しいです。

埼玉医大の性転換手術以来，「性同一性障害」という言葉が世間に広く知られるようになり，それなりに情報は流通するようになった。
しかし，残念なことに，そのほとんどが，きちんとした根拠をもたない伝聞情報や虚偽情報であり，真摯に救済を求める当事者や，その当事者を理解しようとする一般の人たちを，かえって苦しめる結果になっている。

この本は，その種のたぐいの「トンデモ」情報とは一線を画すものであり，とくに著者の吉永みち子さんの丁寧でバランスの取れた取材には，敬意を表したい。
本書は，現時点でベストの「性同一性障害入門書」である。この本を読んだ後で，虎井まさ衛さんの著作や，医療・法律の専門家の著書に進むのがよいだろう。
