　「物理学の世紀」ということで、物理学のこれまでの発展、そして今後の展開などを学びたくて本書を読みました。確かにこれまでの主要な物理学の概念はほとんど登場したものの、それら一つ一つの説明が不十分で歴史的な発展の様子があまり感じとれませんでした。バンド構造の説明は、大学で学んだよりわかりやすかったです。個々の分野についてかなり知識がある人にとっては、物理学を縦横無尽に飛び回るようで楽しい本だと思います。また勉強して読み返したいと思います。

２０世紀に劇的に発展した物理学の世界が
社会との関係を絡めたりしながら語られます。
今世紀、科学技術はどのように発展していくのでしょうか。
未来に思いを馳せつつ前世紀のおさらいも是非。

　この本を理解するためには、相対性理論や量子力学などの成り立ちを知っている必要があるでしょう。何も知らずにこの本を読んでも、専門用語の羅列で理解できないかもしれません。とは言っても数式は出てこないので、おおかたの歴史を知っているのなら文系でも読みこなせるかもしれません。

　初心者のためにやさしく歴史を紐解くのではなく、専門家である筆者が筆のおもむくままに書かれたように感じます。哲学的な言葉も出てきたりします。

　学者である筆者の歴史観が知りたいのであるならば、読む価値はあると思います。しかし、入門書的なことを期待するならばほかの書を探したほうがいいでしょう。
