「花の慶次」は１９９０年から週刊少年ジャンプに連載された、傾奇者(かぶきもの)を主人公にした歴史ロマン漫画。その最大の魅力はなんといっても主人公前田慶次の生き様。自由と風流を愛し、愛馬・松風とともに絢爛なる安土桃山時代を疾駆したその姿は時代を超えて読むものを惹き付ける魅力をもつ。原作は隆慶一郎の「一夢庵風流記」。その本巻。「傾奇者」―。「傾く」とは異風の姿形を好み、異様な振る舞いや突飛な行動を愛することをさす…。時は戦国時代末期、ここに天下一の傾奇者がいた。その男の名は前田慶次。　大軍に急襲された末森城を救うため、単身出陣した慶次だが・・・。

熱い！厚い！篤い！前田慶次が戦国時代を駆け巡り、莫逆の友達との熱い友情、自分の正義を貫き位の差も気にせずムカツク奴はぶっ飛ばす！自由奔放、大胆不敵、痛快な物語！男だったらジーンと熱くなる事間違いなし！読めばわかります！

バケモノじみた強さの主人公がバッタバッタと敵を薙ぎ倒す、ある意味とても「少年漫画」らしい漫画。
原作は小説である分、説明的な独特の間があるのが特徴。「戦国時代」が舞台・・・と聞けば、安易に織田信長や徳川家康やらを主人公に持ってくるのが従来の漫画だっただろうが、これはおそらくはそれまではほとんどと言っていいほどに知られていなかった加賀・前田家の反逆児「前田慶次」を主人公に持ってきた。

で、この小説・漫画の影響でゲーム「信長の野望」シリーズでは慶次の能力も随分と贔屓されることになった模様。特に戦闘力なんてそうでしょう。実在の慶次も武力だけでなく、文芸や戦略にも通じ多くの著名人とも交流のあった男で、太閤・秀吉も「怒る前にうなるほど」だったとか。
描写が今のジャンプでは表現出来ないのではないかと思うようなアダルトな描写もありました。伊達政宗・真田幸村・石田三成・直江兼次・結城秀康等、それぞれの立場で「己の信念」を貫こうとする男たちの「生き様」が乱世に大輪の花を狂い咲きさせたこと。それこそがこの作品の魅力ではないかと思う。

慶次が「関ヶ原の戦い」の後、「大坂の陣」を迎える前に死んでいたのは意外。
実質、武将たちの「戦国時代」は「関ヶ原」で天下の大勢が決まり、終局を迎えた。
後は、「徳川幕府」というかつて無いような巨大な権力が自分たちの上に君臨したことを思い知りながら、「封建体制」に組み込まれていくのみ。そんな時代の到来を見ずして死んだことはむしろ慶次のような人間にとっては幸せなことだったのだろう。

逆に「ライヴァルたちの死」を横目に見ながら、しぶとく生き残って豊臣に引導を渡した家康のしぶとさに驚嘆の声を禁じ得ない。
