野球漫画と呼ばれる作品のなかでも一見地味だが、実は異色の名作である。美少女との恋愛もなければ、悪球打ちや魔球もなく、プロ野球選手だった父親もいない。監督もマネージャーもいないどこにでもある中学校の野球部員達とキャプテンが、ひたすら努力を続けていくという話である。必ずしもリアリズムに基づく作品ではないにも関わらず、その努力の描写からは他の作品には無い何とも言えないリアリティを感じさせられる。

あのメジャーリーガーイチローも少年の頃愛読したという「キャプテン」。「ドカベン」や「巨人の星」のようにスーパースターが登場したり、派手な魔球が飛び出したりする作品ではありません。どこにでもいる平凡な少年達が主人公です。ストーリーも大変地味です。
しかし、ここに描かれているのは単に野球だけでなく、家族の絆や仲間を思いやる気持ち、そしてコツコツと努力することの大切さ・・といった今の私達が失いつつある「古き良き日本」そのものです。
そういう意味で、この漫画は日本スポーツ漫画史上における最高傑作であると同時に、大変優れた教科書でもあると断言します。続編の「プレイボール」と合わせてぜひご一読をオススメします！

ちばあきおのキャプテンは野球漫画の枠を越えてその感動がある。
青葉から転校してきた谷口の、その影の努力により成長していく
姿に読む人は色々と考えさせられる。何かにつまずいた時必ず励
まし、そして思った以上の感動を与えてくれる漫画です。
