冒険物語の名作です。私が30年前に子供の頃読んだ十五少年漂流記の挿絵と同じで懐かしく購入しました。小学校高学年向けですが挿絵が約3ページごとにあります。挿絵画家の柳柊ニ先生の挿絵は丁寧に描きこまれており子どもの想像力をかき立ててくれると思います。名作は文章で読ませるのはもちろんですが挿絵のよさも子どもの心をひきつける物ではないでしょうか。（表紙装丁は柳柊ニさんではありません。）
また、この少年少女世界名作の森シリーズは本文上のスペースに本文中の語句（火打石、羅針盤、コロンブスなど）の説明が図や文章で説明されているのも子どもにとって関連知識を得る手助けになりそうです。

この本を私が知ったのは小学校高学年の時で、当時は凄く貪る様に何度も読んだものでした。本当ならニュージーランドの近海で、楽しくヨットで舟遊びをするはずが大人の乗っていないヨットに確か上は十四、五歳で下は五、六歳という状態でいがみあったり、仲直りしたり、島にやってきた悪人を協力して追い払ったりと、随所に見せ場が盛りだくさんです。

　１５人の少年たちが、漂流して無人島に流れ着き、
そこで２年間、サバイバル生活を送るという話。
途中で海賊なんかも出ます。
また、誰がリーダーか？みたいなことで、内部抗争もあったりします。

　冒険小説随一の傑作でしょう。
子供たちが知恵を振り絞り、協力し合い、
ときに争いながら無人島で生き抜いていく様子は、
まさに純粋な感動を覚えます。
そして、読み手が同年代ならば、それは憧れとなるでしょう。
そういう意味で、読み始めの本としても最適です。
ベルヌ氏本人は、文体が崩れて読みにくいことで有名らしいのですが、
それは数度に重なる和訳で、解消されていますし。

　そしてまた、西洋合理主義が体現された小説でもあります。
熟慮・節制・勤労というテーマが随所に表現され、
加えて男権社会・黒人・英仏の対立等、当時の世相が暗に表れています。
このような点から、「味読」するに十分にたる、大人の小説としても楽しめるのでは？
というよりも本来は、大人向けであったのが、時代と共に少年文学化した作品のようです。

　まだ読んでいない少年は、この本から読書という漂流の旅へと出発し、
すでに通り過ぎた大人は、この島でしばしの休息と、懐かしさを味わってはいかがでしょうか？
