小4の息子に購入しましたが、飽きることなく何度も読んでいます。
活字はわりと細かく、難しい漢字も使われていますが、ふりがながうってあり、各所に漫画やイラストがあるため、大変解りやすくなっています。
収録人数が多い分、それぞれの人物についての記述はあまり深く掘り下げたものではありませんが、各年代にどういった人物が活躍したか、という知識を得る分には十分なのではないかと思います。
日本の歴史について、それぞれの時代をじっくり知りたいのであれば日本の歴史シリーズを読破するのがよいのかもしれませんが、この本一冊でも勉強になると思います。
もう一冊の別巻「日本の歴史できごと事典」も購入しようと思っています。

内容としては
・日本の歴史別巻ということで、日本の歴史上の人物およそ850人、そのうち重要人物（約350人）については、目次に名前を載せて紹介されています。
・目次に名前のない人物については、特集ページ、コラム、欄外、本文のまんがや文章中に登場します。
・小中学校の教科書で習う人物を中心に、それ以外にも学習の参考になるような人物も載っています。
・それぞれの人物は活躍した時代ごとに10の時代（弥生・古墳・飛鳥時代〜近・現代）に配分してあります。
・巻末には人物年表、表紙の内側（前・後ろの見返し）には、資料（教科書に出てくる42人の人物の出身地と活躍地域）と日本地図（現在の都道府県名と旧国名）が載っています。

・全国学校図書館協議会選定図書
・日本子どもの本研究会選定図書
