パリの暮らしに触れられるような、生きているパリ案内を狙ったシリーズの一冊です。本屋さん､古本屋さん、図書館など50軒ほどを、取り扱っている書物の専門分野別に分けて、１軒づつ綺麗な写真と洒落た言葉で、案内してくれます。取材は,2007年12月にされたそうです。

取材されたお店の選択によるのでしょうか。専門書店に限らず一般書店でも､写真から見る店内は、それぞれに個性があり、一つの美的世界として作られているのには、感心しました。書棚の設えの違いを見るだけでも楽しくなります。本屋とレストラン、あるいはカフェやワインバーなどと兼ねているお店が幾つか紹介されています。羨ましくて、本の世界から抜け出て、パリに実際に行きたくなります。旅行に行っても、図書館は、簡単には利用できないのですが、本書には、旅行者でも自由に使える入館に資格がいらない図書館が紹介されています。

日本では、神保町の洋書専門店が閉店し、少し寂しい状況です。本屋や古本屋は、その国の読書人口の広さと深さを表すものでしょう。伝統ある書肆が消えていくのを見たら、無くなったのを惜しむだけでなく、国の読書文化の現状を嘆くことが大事なのかもしれません。前々世紀から英書専門店として名高いガリニャーニ書店が､今でもニューヨーク・タイムズのベストセラー欄を壁に貼っている写真がありました。生き残るために、時代に即した新たな展開をし、しかも伝統を守っているすごさが、わかります。

海外に行くと、例外なく立ち寄ってしまうのが、ＣＤ、インテリア、そしてブックのショップである。なかでも、パリの本屋さんはカラフルでエスプリに富んでいる。そして、いわゆるワン・ジャンル・オンリーのこだわりの専門店が多い。大型店舗に行くと、雑誌だけでも、その多彩で膨大な売り場スペースに驚かされる。もちろん、フランス語は読めないのだが、いかにもパリを感じさせる写真誌やモード誌を見たり、装丁デザインの美しさに感心したり、店構え、インテリア、レイアウト、書棚やウインドウのディスプレィに至るまでのアートでモダンなスタイルに心惹かれるし、何より本を物色している人たちにすごくムードがあって良い。
今作は、ジュウ・ドゥ・ポゥムによるパリ・ガイドシリーズの中でも、ぺらぺらとページをめくるだけで、パリの雰囲気に触れられる楽しい本である。ジェームス・ジョイスの「ユリシーズ」を世に送り出した書店から、ワインをメインに文学を肴に語り合う文学バーや、本からのインスピレーションをもとにレシピを作るレストランまで紹介されている。この中の、カルチェラタンにある「シネルフレ」は、前を通った事があるのだけれど、生憎閉まっていた。今回読んで、行きたくなった。
ま、ここで紹介されている本屋さんから、セーヌ川沿いに並ぶ屋台の古本街まで、何をやっても、“絵”になるのがパリなんだけれどね。

本屋っていいな〜って純粋に思います。
ただただそう思える本でした。

世界中で個性的な本屋が残り続けることを願ってやまないです。
