副題にもあるように、日本史上最強の女帝、持統天皇の物語です。
今から数年前、高校生の頃、日本史の勉強の合間にコミックを読みました。

先日、この本が文庫版で出ていることを知り、思わずセットで購入してしまいました。１巻は物語の展開が早すぎる気がしたのですが、あとがきを見たら、当初編集者から、20話で終わらせるように言われていた、とのことで納得しました。その後、予想以上の人気に大長編となったようです。

このマンガを読んで歴史の勉強はもちろんのこと、古文（万葉集）の勉強にもなりました。
と、書くとなんだか堅苦しいお勉強のマンガのようですが、そんなことはありません。ここに描かれているラブストーリーは感動的で泣けます！
そしてその背景を理解しつつ読むと更に万葉集に残された歌の素晴らしさに感動してしまいます。このセットは持統天皇が即位するところで終わるのですが、早く続きが読みたくて楽しみにしています。

　万葉の歌と、その世界がこれほど鮮やかに、愛情深く描かれたものがあるだろうか。第一期全６巻でやっと女帝誕生といったところであるが、直接つながらない登場人物も多く、大団円として物語が進行して、興味が尽きない。
　日本の黎明期・古代大和。国家情勢が激動する６４５年、鸕野讃良皇女〈のちの持統天皇〉は誕生した。娘となって有間皇子への恋心を消せぬまま讃良は、父の命により中大兄皇子に嫁ぐことになる。一方、中大兄に疎まれた有間には、非常な運命が待ち受けていた。冷酷で横暴な父への反発心は、讃良に大海人への愛に生きることを決意させる。やがて草壁皇子を産み、夫への愛を深める。
　壬申の乱の後、夫・大海人〈天武天皇〉の即位とともに皇后となる。夫の死後、皇位継承問題で、大津皇子が謀叛を起こす。皇太子・草壁の母としての感情と、皇后としての立場に心乱れるが、大津に対して峻烈な処罰〈死」を言い渡す。このことで草壁は身心を破壊され若死にすることになる。一般に、「人の子を死に追いやるから、自分の子も若死にするのだ」と持統天皇はよく非難される。
　作者は持統天皇を悪く書きたくないという信念があったようだ。巻４のあとがきで「人を悪く言うのは簡単ですが、だれだってきっとそのときは一生懸命生きていた」はずだと述べている。持統天皇に限らず、どの登場人物も血の通った人間として描き、特に男女間の愛の純粋さ、優しさを美麗な筆捌きで描き楽しんでいる。女帝としての苦悩の時代であろう第二期続編が待たれる（雅）

中学生の頃、友人に借りて読んだ時に衝撃を受け、
飛鳥時代の魅力のとりことなりました。
大人になり奈良旅行に行く前にムショーに読みたくなり、
思わず大人買いしてしまいました。やはり、何度読んでもこころ踊ります。
文庫版のため、やや文字が小さくなり読みにくいところもあるのですが、
やはり買ってよかった。その分本棚のスペースは取らないので助かります。
続きは単行本の方を買ってしまいましたが、こちらの続きができたら必ず買います。
