以前、雑誌でドラゴン桜が及ぼした効果について述べてあった。ひとつ目は、東大受験には一定のコツがあることが一流中高一貫校や塾以外にも知られるようになった結果、それまであまり東大とは縁のなかった地方の進学校からも東大を目指す子が増えているという点。もうひとつは、超人気の生命医学分野を除くと、いわゆる一流大学の中で、東大と他の大学との人気差が以前より広がりつつあるという点だ。

所詮はおとぎ話である。でも、現代では漫画の影響はとても大きい。「キャプテン翼」を読んだ子がサッカー選手を目指そうとするのと同じようなことが起きるのはありうることだ。それに、お話しとはいえ、東大の先生がコメントを載せたり、実際に用いられていた受験ノウハウが物語の中でいろいろ織り込まれていたりで、少なくとも「巨人の星」や「明日のジョー」よりは中身にずっとリアルな部分があることも否定はできない。

皮肉なことに、いまや大学にいくこと自体は大して難しい時代ではなくなっている。加えて本格的な少子化時代を迎えて人手不足慢性化により就職も買い手市場が続く可能性が濃厚だ。クライマックスを迎えた本書を読みながら、そんな時代に受験のためとはいえあえて勉強に意味を見出し、上のレベルの学校に挑戦する(それ自体が正しいかどうかについては人それぞれ）には、いろいろな動機が必要になるだろうし、このような漫画の果たす役割は大きいなと改めて思った。

そしてそういう視点でみると、本巻でのストーリの流れも多くの読者に対して、ほどよい印象と読後感を残すという点でなかなか良かったのではないかと思う。

　堂々の完結編と言いたいところだが、番組が時間切れで、最後「巻き」が入って追い立てられるかのようなラストであった。この巻に関して言えば、特に受験に役立つノウハウはなく、お買い得感は全然ない。
　しかし、普通の高校生が１年で東大受験を目指すというのは、荒唐無稽な感じがしたが、全て読み通すと、強い気持ちを維持し続けられれば、何か誰にでもできそうな気がしてくる。このマンガによって救われた想いの高校生も多いのではなかろうか。
　続編の余地はいくらでもある。桜木の新たな挑戦も始まっているように見える。
　なお、合格発表日の風景を見て、共感してくれる異性がいる共学はいいなぁと思ったことを付け加えておきたい。

一次試験の合格発表から二次試験そしてその後までが書かれています。基本的には受験のノウハウを売りにしている本なので本巻でも所々に見受けられます。と同時に当事者や周りの登場人物の成長ぶり心理描写も細かく書かれていてそれなりにリアリティーがあったと思います。ネタバレになるので具体的なことは書けませんが、最後はそれなりにうまくまとめたなと思いました。この辺は人によって好みというか評価の分かれるところかもしれません。兎も角、全巻通じていろいろ参考になりました。この通りやれば自分も東大に入れるかなと思った単純な人は私だけでしょうか。
