水野と矢島は、自分のことを自分で知るのが怖いと思っていること自体が、
成長の証と見るがどうだろう。
もはや彼らには、他人の目というのはほとんど存在せず、
意識が自らの内面に向いている。
何事、ここまで意識レベルが上がると、ほぼ成功したも同じと思う。

正直なところ、今回の巻はとりわけ興味を引くところはほとんどなかった。

センター英語、長文の対策はトピックセンテンスにあると言っているが、はっきり言ってこんなのはもはや常識である。長文というのは英語において重要な部分であるからこそ、解く上での対策に関しては教師側は十分に熟知しており、この程度のことはどの本でもしっかり突いてくるし、英語力のついている人はまず行うようなこと。これで「なるほど」と納得してしまうような人は失礼だが、よっぽど英語の勉強を怠っていたのではないかと思われる。
そして肝心の漫画の内容だが、抜き打ちテストに水野のスランプ、彼女の母親や大沢を絡ませたり、子供の成長をやけに大きく描いているなど、話が大きくなってきていて、ありがちな「普通の漫画」の雰囲気が大きくなっている。恋愛要素の表現が以前より深くなっていることも、その雰囲気に拍車をかけている。
水野や矢島も初期の頃にあったバカの雰囲気は皆無。今や完全に普通の高校生だ。桜木の言う言葉も過去の内容に似通っているところが増えてきて、そろそろネタが尽きてきたのか、という印象だ。
決して読んでいてつまらない漫画ではないのだが、ちょっと話を伸ばしすぎ、という気がしなくもない。初期の頃のこの漫画を面白くしていた独特の熱い雰囲気が、最近になってどんどん薄れてきていることは確かだ。

東大受験がテーマの物語なんですが、夏休みの過ごし方やセンター試験など、大学受験全般でも共通する事柄も書かれているので、大学受験を真剣に考えている高校生は是非読んでもらいたい漫画です。
さて、今巻の内容はというと、パッション屋良くさい川口先生のセンター英語対策と、勉強に行き詰まったときの対処法がメインなんなんですけど、あまり詳しく書いてしまうと面白くないので詳しくは書きません。自分は表向きは進学校という公立高に通ってましたが、桜木先生みたいにこんなに事細かに学習要領を書いている教師はいませんでした。
