ここに至るまでの７冊分は、あくまで“カイ（海）の物語”でしたが、この８巻から、９巻の前半までは、「スランプ」→「カイとの再会」→「気づき」→「再起」、というプロセスをたどる“修平の物語”だといえるでしょう。
カイは天才です。
一方、修平は秀才肌です。
修平がどれほど努力しても、カイはさらにそのずっと先へと進んでいるのです。
天才であることにあぐらをかくことなく、カイはものすごく努力もしているのだから、それは当然のことでしょう。
だけどやっぱり、修平が自分の限界を知り、壁にぶつかり、もがき苦しむたび、一読者であるオレは、その姿に自分自身を投影し、とてもせつなくなってしまいます。
でも、他の多くのコミックに登場する「天才の主人公と秀才肌のライバル」たちと違うところは、彼らはまず“親友”なのだということです。
たとえ修平が“壁”を感じて、カイの存在を遠くに感じてしまっていても、カイにとって修平は、小５で出逢った頃と同じ、親友のままなのです。
そしてもちろん忘れてはいけないのは、修平のお父さんである世界的ピアニスト・雨宮洋一郎の、人間として、そして父親としてのふところの大きさでしょう。
そういった、大切な人たちが、揺るがない心で自分に接し、自分のことを思っていてくれることに気づいた時、修平は見失いかけていた“自分”を取り戻して行くのです。
その姿をみていると、ごく自然に、涙が流れてきます。
ある意味「超人」であるカイとはまた違う意味で、オレにとって修平は、とても魅力的なキャラクターです。
この作品は現在も連載が続き、彼らもさらなる挑戦を重ねていますが、物語の上で、彼らにとっての“幸せな結末”が待っていることを、オレは祈っています。

壁にぶち当たり悩む雨宮修平。彼はその解決を求め、再びカイに会おうとする。カイを捜し求める探索の中で、前巻から5年後の人々の現状の姿が示される。

でもバッハのイギリス組曲によるストリップダンスという発想はおもしろい。確かにあの第1曲目はジャズ顔負けに非常にリズミカルでぴったりだけれど。
