著者について

■手塚治虫（てづかおさむ）
本名：手塚治。1928年11月3日、大阪府豊中市生まれ。大阪大学医学専門部卒業。医学博士。1946年「マアチャンの日記帳」でデビュー。1947年「新宝島」が大ヒットする。以来、日本のストーリー漫画の確立に尽くす。また、アニメーションの世界でも、大きな業績を残す。代表作に「鉄腕アトム」をはじめ「リボンの騎士」「火の鳥」「ブラック・ジャック」「三つ目がとおる」等がある。1989年死去。

第７巻は、浦沢直樹氏の『ＰＬＵＴＯ』の原作である「地上最大のロボット」が収録されている。この作品は、人間の愚かさ、業の深さ、欲深さが描かれている一方で、ロボットたちの純粋さ、優しさ、温かさが描かれている。人間の手によって創られたロボット達が、人間のあるべき姿、進むべき道を示しているのはなんとも皮肉である。
この作品の他にも６つの作品が収められているが、どれを読んでも古臭い感じせず、十分読み応えがある。また、『ＰＬＵＴＯ』と『地上最大のロボット』を読み比べてみるのも面白いのではないだろうか。

　鉄腕アトムの多くのエピソードの中でも『地上最大のロボット』は、当然のように「心」を持つと信じられてきたアトムでなく、善悪を知らない高性能ロボットがいかにそれを身につけ「人」として成長し、「人」として死にうるかを描いている。　つまり、アシモフが提唱した有名なロボット三原則のように単純な規則からも「心」は生まれうると。　

　まず、高性能ロボットがロボット三原則を運用する時に、併せて人間社会の善悪判断を学習していくというシステム設計は効率側面から至極当然であること。　そして、人間社会の善悪判断を学習をするためには周囲からの毀誉褒貶に敏感に反応する判断装置が必要であること。
　この作品ではプルートーもアトムも繰り返し毀誉褒貶に晒され、それぞれに大きなショックを受けている。　ウランからワッペンをもらうプルートー、大きな力を得たものの人間から「化けもの」と陰口を囁かれるアトム、ひとつひとつの場面が読む人間の「心」を鋭く突き刺し、その瞬間自分の内部で起こったと同じ現象がロボットの回路にも発生していることが痛いほど解る。　

　この主題は古くは石森章太郎『人造人間キカイダー』によって再び奏でられ、少女マンガの清水玲子『メタルと花嫁』、近年では神山健司『攻殻機動隊stand alone complex』等でも変奏されたが、ここまでシンプルに、単純規則から心の獲得までを追った物語はなかろう。　複雑系の研究が始まってすらいない時代に、ご都合主義でなく、丹念にこれを描きえたことは、思想として驚異的だ。

この巻で、最も面白いのは7人のロボットを倒すために作られたプルートウとアトムの闘いを描いた「地上最大のロボットの巻」だ。アトムの物語の中でも最も人気の高い作品だ。この話で作者は、ロボットの評価（つまり人間の評価）は、強さという一つの指標だけではない、ということを強く訴えている。そこが単純な勧善懲悪の物語ではないアトムの奥の深さである。お互いに、個性を尊重し多面的に評価し尊重しあい共存できる社会の到来を作者が願っていることが伝わってくる。
