休載が多くなって、かなり間隔が開いての第４巻。
最強戦闘民族の最強戦士の子という肉体属性よりも、知将として
の頭脳戦にスポットあてる方向になって、面白くなってきた。
この巻では初陣を描いていて、エウメネスが自分の人生の有り様
を自覚するところがいい。善良素朴な村人の中で、自分だけにし
かできない殲滅戦の作戦立案が成ったときの高揚感と自信。
しかし、必要とあればいくらでも人を殺せるという異能は平和の
訪れとともに…　
エウネメスは自分の才能も、それを必要とするところも必要とさ
れないところも全て自覚して、迷いなく行動していく。友情も恋
も確かなものだったのに、それは記憶の中にしまいこんで…　
頑張れ！

アレクサンドロス大王の部将兼書記官をつとめたエウメネスの生涯を自伝的につづるコミックの4巻目。
この巻ではエウメネスの「最初の戦い」が描かれ、3巻目まで虐げられていた主人公に感情移入していた人はやっとスカッとする展開となる。
また、巻末で1巻の冒頭にもどり、ここでこの長い物語のプロローグが終わり、次巻からフィリッポスやアレクサンドロスが登場するのだなぁ、という期待を持たせるところで終わる。
本作の魅力は何と言っても主人公のキャラクターだろう。闊達でありながら内省的なエウメネスに惹かれる人は多いと思う。「寄生獣」と比較されることも多いが、新一よりも完成されたキャラクターと言えるかもしれない。
エウメネスやバルシネのその後については、森谷公俊『王妃オリュンピアス』、『アレクサンドロスの征服と神話』等を読むと輪郭がつかめる。あえてそれらの情報に触れずに物語として楽しむのも手かもしれない。

ようやく出た４巻目です。
岩明先生と言えば「寄生獣」が有名ですが、これはそれを超える名作になりそうな気がします。そういえば「寄生獣（完全版）」に収録されていた著者の言葉に、『物語には着地点があって、うまくそこに辿り着けた作品は幸せだ』的なものがありました。たぶん本作にもきっとそんな着地点が用意されているように思います。
歴史の流れの中で、英雄がどのようにして英雄になって行ったのか、というテーマをその人物の幼少時代から書いていくという、結構気の遠くなるような作業ですが、是非すばらしい着地点を目指して完結させてほしいと思います。
文句なくオススメです。
