80年代までの自民党のダイナミズムの源泉が派閥にあったことは事実であるが、
小泉純一郎により、自民党は破壊され派閥の機能不全が加速した。
小選挙制度導入後の政治の流れを踏まえて、
現在の自民党における総理総裁選出プロセスを解説している。

本書は、
著者が記者としての経験を語り、
論を進める。
世論調査に依存し、
勝ち馬に乗りたがる自民党各派閥の弱体ぶりがリアリテリーをもって描かれている。

本書に描かれた、過去の自民党と現在の自民党ははっきと異なる政党だ。
その変化は、「自民党は歴史的な役割を終えたのではないか」と感じさせるほどだ。

また総理総裁候補というのは、
自民党内の実力や力学ではなく、
集票力だという新しい価値観が面白かったが、
麻生総理の選出自体はちっとも筋のいいプロセスに思えなかった。

面白くてためになる好著です。

世論調査に翻弄される現代政治の表裏を精緻な取材で見事に描いたまったく新しい政治ルポルタージュです。こんなタイプの記者が日本に育ってきているとは驚きです。
著者の柿崎氏は奇しくも次期大統領オバマと同い年の1961年生まれです。まさに我々国民がこれからの日本の政治の主役であると自覚を促される興味深い著書であります。Yes We Can.
読んでみると目から鱗が落ちることばかりなのでぜひご一読を。同僚との共著でありますが安倍内閣の崩壊を描いた「空白の宰相」（講談社）もお薦めです。

　本書は小選挙区導入後の自民党政治のあり方を分析したもの。叙述の軸は２００６，７，８年の総裁選挙だ。
　著者が印象深く描き出すのは、世論調査に翻弄される政治家の姿である。世論調査に政治家が敏感であることは、国民主権の観点から見て望ましいように思えるかもしれない。現状はしかしながら、そのような楽観視を許さないようだ。
　日本国憲法は間接民主制を採用しているが、その意味を再考する必要があると本書を読んで痛感した。
