「ただ不運を嘆くべきではない。運について知ることこそが
われわれの生にとって数少ない重要事項なのである」ということばで終わる
「競馬の快楽」の話にとても共感しました。

運、不運、ギャンブル、勝負のこと。著者の人生論のなかで
展開する話のからみが面白かったです。

読み進めるうちに、「負けてもかまわない」という著者の
強い意志を感じました。最後には、生きるうえでの力を与えてもらい、
読後の充実感を覚えました。

賭けの本というよりも、ギャンブルをおともにした
自由な生き方、人生の歩き方について書かれたエッセイで、
わたしはギャンブル好きではないけれど、共感しながら読みました。

ギャンブルでも人生でも、勝つ、負ける、
多かれ少なかれ人は誰しもそんな経験をしているのでは…。
勝ったとき、負けたときのものごとの考え方、
身の処し方を考え直すきっかけになった印象深い本です。

5.0 out of 5 stars やっと見つけた、学者が語る「賭け」の本質エッセイ, 2008/10/5
日本ではまだこのジャンルのエッセイは少なく、なかなか
読み込める本がないのであきらめていたところ、いい新書に
合いました。ギャンブルとか賭けというテーマについて、真剣に
語るのは難しいのだろうと、あきらめていたところだったので
僕の愛読書になりました。

この国では、正面から書物や論調として、賭けごとを語ったり述べるのは
禁断なのか、必要がないからなのか…、スポーツ紙やハウツー本は多々あるのに、
まっとうな読み物がないのはなぜだろう、売れないからか。

賭け事体験を通して、人生の本質は賭けなのだ、ということを
暗にも直接にも訴える、このような本をもっと読みたいものです。
