　島田荘司の作品は読破しているつもりだが、それらの中では(今のところ)最低ランクに属する。　メカや歴史に関するペダンティックな文章もイマイチ興味をそそられないし、警官嫌い、日本軍人嫌い が露骨にかもし出される描写以外には、島田荘司「らしさ」があまりに希薄である。
　最後半になって、これからの展開がちょっと楽しみになるような予感もしないではなくなる。　しかし、ちょっと大人向けの重さには欠けている様な気もする。。。

まだほんの序盤なので、物語の全貌はまったく見えてきませんが、
戦時下における人間の卑劣さをたっぷりと批判しつつ、
題名どおり、クラシカルで妖しい雰囲気をはなつジュブナイルＳＦです。
「ＳＦ」というより「空想科学小説」という表現が似合いそう。

おもしろくなりそうなのですが…　このレーベルはやっぱり割高です。
全十二巻で、原稿用紙三千枚近い大作になると思うのですが、
島田荘司はその分量の長篇を、ふつうに一冊の単行本でだす作家だから…
「大河ノベル」と銘うっているけれど、単なる分冊のような感覚はぬぐえない。
コストパフォーマンスの悪さで、星をひとつマイナスしました。

戦中の物語りながら、空想ファンタジーの彩り強い作品。
物語の始まり部分であり、まだまだ展開があること世が予想されますが、
それでもこの１冊をとってみても十二分に面白さを感じさせられます。

講談社ＢＯＸにて企画されている大河ノベルへの取り組みのため、
全１２冊に及ぶ作品が、今後どのような変貌を遂げてどこへ行き着くのか。
否が応でも期待感が高まります。
