　この「興亡の世界史」シリーズの編集委員は「歴史を問うという行為は、現在の位置を見きわめ、現代人が直面している問題のありかを明確にして、これからの人類の進むべき道を問うためにこそある(P17)」という思いで一致しているという。
　そして「特定の人びとや文化が特権的な支配権をふるうのではなく、あるいは自由の名のもとに弱肉強食のすさんだ世界を造ってしまうのでもなく、自己への配慮が他者への尊重と相互的な共生へとつながるような、そういう世界を構想することはできないのか(P20)」という問題意識に基づき、これまでの巻で論じられなかったテーマを論じる。
　具体的にはモンゴル史学から見た真の世界史像、人口歴史学から見た人類の性質と今後の課題、宗教の意義、アフリカ史の問題、中華帝国と日本の関係の変遷、そして各委員の対談からなる。各トピックとも史学の最前線のホットなものばかりで読みごたえがある。我々現代人の傲慢な見方を反省させられる指摘も多い。
　世界史を学ぶ意味とは何か、どんな方法が目指されるのか、我々人類が抱える課題はどう取り組むべきか、読みごたえたっぷりの一冊である。

　講談社版「世界史」全集の最終巻になります（但し、巻数順として。現時点
では未刊行のものもあります）。タイトルからも類推出来ますが、歴史を通じて
現在の問題を考えてみよう、というのが本書のお題。

　問題は多々有るので、あれもこれもとはいきません。本書が選んだのは人口や
宗教やアフリカなど・・・5本。これに実質的な「前書」である第1章と、座談会
方式の最終章で、「世界史とは何ぞや」や、「世界史のこれから」といった点に
ついて識者の考えが述べられております。

　最新の研究成果を盛り込んでいる点や、世界史＝西洋史と成りやすいものですが
敢えて（？）その視点とは別の視点で（だからこそ、このような通史を出す意味
も有る）迫っているのも、一読の価値有りと思わせるのです。

　特に第2章の人口問題、第3章の海（交易）の歴史、第5書のアフリカの歴史
（と現代に於ける、アフリカのイメージがどのように「作られてきたか？」）は
特に得るものがありました。

　お題がお題なだけに、シリーズの他の本を読んでいなくても手に取れる一冊です。
