02年10月のノベルスの文庫化でシリーズの1作目，3編の連作短編集になります．

高校の民俗学研究会を舞台で，伝説や秘密を解き明かしていく…のかと思いきや，
ダジャレやとぼけたやり取りが多く，確かにいろいろな秘密には迫っていくものの，
1編目がおわるころには，まじめに読んで考えていたことがバカらしくなってきます．

また，民俗学ということで聞き慣れない言葉も多いのですが気にするほどではなく，
まわりの人物や主人公の操る妙な古武道，繰り返される小ネタが楽しませてくれます．
ちょっと好みはわかれると思いますが，東川篤哉さんなどがお好きならおすすめします．

ただそれも3編目だけはやり過ぎに感じ，あまりのくどさにうんざりしてしまいます．
特にこの編は猟奇的な事件で，そこにまでユーモアを絡めることに嫌悪感を抱きます．
作風とは理解しつつも気分が悪く，これさえなければ楽しく読み終えられたのですが…．

民俗学の奥深さと主人公「比夏留」の言動の快活さが織り成す、作者独自の歴史観がうねる作品だと思います。さまざまな「洞」にまつわる伝奇・伝説の類を駄洒落やこじ付けで読むものを納得させてしまうところが圧巻だと思います。
本作品は序曲に過ぎず、次に「邪馬台洞の研究」へステップアップし、「天の岩戸の研究」で完結を迎えます。この本を買うならば覚悟してください。最後を見たいばかりに、残りの２冊も購入してしまうことでしょう。
