主人公は自分勝手、上司の女性はひどいめにあってるが、書き込みが浅く、そんなことがあったように感じられないので同情心がわかない。もう１人の女性も主人公にいいように使われて、読んでいてイライラする。主要人物に魅力がない。本の薄さに比例して、中身も薄い。よくわからない内に終わってしまった。

コーンウェルの新作シリーズと思い書店で手に取った。訳者あとがきから、ニューヨーク・タイムズ・マガジンに連載されたものであり、
米国のTVシリーズで言えば「PILOT」にあたり、評判が良ければシリーズ化したいであろう力作と期待をして買ったのだが、
結論から言えば、ストーリー展開は平板で、なんとも散漫な出来栄え。
高いIQを持つも学習障害のきらいがあるらしい美男子の主人公も、パートナーのテネシーの女性捜査官も、どうにもキャラクターの書き込みが浅く平凡。
スカーペッタとマリーノとのような気の利いたもしくは皮肉の聞いた会話も無い。
ストーリーのカギになる美人女性検事も人物像の描写が“不安定”、そしてなにより肝心の犯人の描き方は手抜きしすぎ。
本というより、出来の悪い映画の脚本を読まされたような印象。このままのシリーズ化は無理でしょう。

　コーンウェル女史の新作。

　ケイ・スカーペッタシリーズの最新刊へのレヴューに書いた、
僕の願いが届いたのだろうか、全くの新シリーズだ。

　コーンウェル女史の世界には完璧な男性がたいてい一人出てくる。
今回は女性の主人公
（美貌で、中年で、有能で、政治的策略に囚われていて、不機嫌で、異性にモテる）ではなく、
今までの主人公達が「永遠の恋人」と位置づけていた「完璧な男性」
を主人公に据えているところが新しい。
今回の主人公、ウィン・ガラーノ捜査官は、
黒人とイタリア人のハーフ。美貌の、才能あふれる若者である。

　今回の主人公はどのシリーズよりも魅力が無い。

　無論人の好みは色々だから、最高に好きだと言う人も居るだろう。
しかし、コーンウェル女史の作品を背負って立つ強さは僕には感じられなかった。

　女史の作品に共通している事は「怒り」では無いだろうか。
その怒りに共感出来た時、物語の主人公に（たいてい政治的に有力な、美貌の、中年以上の年の女性、
という自分とかけはなれた人物であるにもかかわらず）感情移入出来るのだ。
しかし今回は怒りの方向も定まらず、主人公は状況に流され、女に助けられ・・・。
マーロウだったらちょっとダサイところが愛せるが、この主人公にはそれがない。
完璧な男性だからだ。

　ストーリーは起伏に富む。
というより、二つの場所を同時に追う、場面の切り替えがめまぐるしい。
事件の、主人公に取っての意味（怒りの方向性）が最後まで確定しない為、興味が持続しづらい。

　コーンウェル女史らしい良さが無くはないのだろうが、
女史の作品を全て読んでいる「ファン」の一人としてはこれは全く評価に値しない。
多分女史の作品は次作も（ひょっとしたらその次も）読むだろうが、手応えが戻らない限りは
女史の本のレビューを書くのはコレが最後になるだろう。
