みんなが「のっぺらぼう」に見える。そんな子供の訴えから始まるファンタジー。
この子供に、伯父が語り始める。自分もそうなんだ、と。
そして、伯父が小学生五年生の頃の話を語る。

この伯父は1963年生まれという設定なので、時は、1974年頃。場所は、パルプ町という町名があるほど製紙工場が圧倒的な存在感を示す町。

1974年といえば、オイルショックの真っ只中。トイレットペーパーが売り切れ、製紙工場もパニックだったろう。そんな時代を背景に、子供達の放課後が活き活きと描き出される。自分も同じ時代を生きた者としてとても懐かしい気分に浸りました。

ファンタジーは「違い者」との壮絶な戦いなのだが、なぜか陰惨さを感じない。

死体探しというグロい探検に出かける『スンタンド・バイ・ミー』という映画が珠玉の青春映画であったように、この作品も優れた青春小説であるに違いない。

恋愛ものかと思ったらミステリー？ファンタジー？

小学生の息子が「みんなの顔がのっぺらぼうに見える」と言い出した。
そのとき僕は20年前にいなくなった兄に連絡しなくては、と思った。
なぜなら兄がそう言ったからだ。
誰かが「のっぺらぼうに見える」と言ったら俺に連絡しろ、と。

その後、僕の家にやってきた兄は
彼が家を出た理由を語りはじめる。

兄は息子と同じように人の顔がのっぺらぼうに見えるのだった。
なぜ？
その理由を話し出す兄。
そして事実が明らかになっていく。

本当にファンタジーなんだけど、
ちょっとミステリー仕立てで
読んでいてかなり面白く感じられた。
それまで小路さんの作品は
『東京バンドワゴン』と『東京公園』しか読んでいなかったので
その作風の違いに驚きましたが、
でも、面白いものは面白いんですよね。

人の顔がのっぺらぼうに見える。
その背後に隠された事実。
微妙に展開が読めそうな感じもしますが、
最後まで一気に読めましたね。

ものすごく悲しい事実なのに、
淡々とした感じが、余計に静かな怖さ、を引き出しているような気がしました。

「のっぺらぼう」というオビ文にひかれて
中身も見ずに購入。

ノスタルジックな感動作的な
雰囲気で売ってたけど、

誰が犯人なんだろう・・・と
考えながらよみ進めるミステリーだった。

で、最後の最後で、
まるで恩田陸のSFミステリーのようなオチ。


これはこれで、楽しかったけど。
