私の中で久々のヒットです。
本屋で何気なく手にとって、シンプルなタイトルと、おもしろげな表紙の絵が気に入って買いました。

砂漠の中の荒野での穴掘り作業をさせる更生キャンプが舞台です。
穴掘り作業の更生キャンプでの共同生活−
序盤からリアリティがあるような無いような不思議な空気がありますが、その雰囲気にすっと入れるかどうかで評価が分かれる気がします。
（ちなみに私はこういう雰囲気好きですけど。）

昔話が合間合間に入ってきますが、最初はメインの更生施設での穴掘り話の腰が折られるような印象を持ちましたが、ちゃんとつながってるんですねぇ。
全部読むとちゃーんと、全部のエピソードがつながっているのが分かります。
こういう風にきちんとつながってる話し、大好きです。

話の展開も主人公がどうなってしまうのか、ずーっとはらはらしながら読みました。
もう自分もすっかりいい大人ですが、主人公の頑張りに、自分も少年に戻ったような気持ちになって元気をもらいました。
何度でも繰り返し読みたいと思います。

これはまさしく聴く「物語」。語りに耳をすましたい。
「小説」として「読んだ」なら、好みの問題ではあるが、
食い足りないと感じる人もいるかもしれない。

行間たっぷり。間（ま）の文学。
その奥にふくよかなものが潜んでいる。
味わうかすっとばすかで面白さは天と地ほどに違うはず。
すべては読者の想像力と思考力にかかっている。
すっとばしたら、何がなにやら、筋書きすら満足には追えないだろう。

世の中、読書も急ぎ足。数をこなす。そういう読書も楽しかろうが、
一冊の本を、手垢がつくほどじっくりゆっくり、繰り返し読む読書もある。
どちらを選ぶかは人それぞれだが、
子供たちには、「本読み巧者」の大人をまねて、
なんでもかんでも読み飛ばす癖を最初からつけてほしくない。

子供向けのファンタジーだと思って読み始めたのですが、決してそんなことは無いです。もちろん子供が読んでも面白いでしょうけど。現実にはありえない設定ですが自然や人物の描写が巧みで荒唐無稽な感じはまったくしません。構成も見事で読んでて面白いだけでなく読後感も最高です。マーク・トウェインのトム・ソーヤーの冒険やハックルベリー・フィンの冒険に似ていると思いました。きっとこの小説も将来にわたって長く読み継がれることでしょう。
