600ページ大作だけあってどんどん謎が増殖してゆく(そこがまたいいのだが)が、どうやって収束させてゆくかが不安だった。が、見事に御手洗は全てを解決してくれた。島田荘司健在の証拠である。

島田氏の奇抜な発想には驚かされるばかりだが、それが一段とヒートアップしたものが本作なのだ。ネジで体にはまっている死体、そして謎の童話。噴出する「ミステリーズ」が魅力的。飽きない。それらを無視してはいけないが、もう1つ注目したいのは、引き裂かれた男女のドラマである。
謎を解いたその先には人間たちの過去がある、思いがある。その構成がすごい。
島田荘司は都筑道夫のごとく全身推理作家だ。

良いですね！島田ワールド炸裂です。混沌から論理的に収束に向かうプロセスは、御手洗的（島田的）説得性に満ち、ファンならば、うん、うんと納得することしきりです。一気に読めます！

御手洗潔とハインリッヒの、ホームズ・ワトソン的な関係性が清々しいミステリー長編。徹頭徹尾、ひとつの室内、おなじ机を囲んで物語が紡がれていきますが、会話のテンポが小気味よく、不思議のなかから拾い上げた新しい謎、そしてその謎を紐解いていく過程がすらすらと頭に流れ込んできます。
思っていたよりも、ずっと読みやすかったですよ。
