陳 舜臣先生の小説「十八史略」が面白くて、各時代を掘り下げた「三国志」や「項羽と劉邦」「水滸伝」「隋唐演義」「朱龍賦」などなど読んできてその延長線でこの本にも手を出しましたが、初めて失敗したと思った本がこれでした。

のちの光武帝になる劉秀は、十八史略版だとユーモラス＆ローテンションな人物で、本人にその気が無くても、偉大な兄や仲間たちの絆と熱気に当てられ成長したり。ライバルとなる前漢を簒奪した王莽に関しても、現代風に見れば早すぎる社会主義国家の実践者という描かれ方をしてたので、その辺突っ込んだ話になると期待してたんですけど……。

この小説では劉秀兄弟がメチャクチャ仲悪く、ユーモラスというより皮肉屋な性格に書かれてる劉秀が読んでていい気分しません。戦闘描写も戦略、戦術を競うより武器の優劣だけで勝敗が決まるとかＳＦじみた超展開で、子供だましみたいです。

王莽に至っては、戦局と全く関係ない赤眉軍の人に主観を何故か大きく裂いてるせいか、いつの間にかに倒されてたりするので、もう話の流れが訳分からなくなってます。史実風小説として見るには嘘展開が多すぎますし、演義風小説として見るには人間ドラマを嫌な方向にもって行き過ぎなので、作者の意図が皆目不明な内容でした。

個人的に作者には原作になる後漢書、通俗二十一史をしっかり読んで丸写しして本にした方がマシだったのではないかと。

　漢光武こと劉秀は、風雲を叱咤する英雄というよりも、どちらかと言えば堅気の書生タイプというイメージです。そんな彼も、王莽政権への怨嗟の声が野に満ち、赤眉などの武装反乱勢力が荒れ狂う中、安閑とした日々を過ごすことは許されませんでした。本人が望んだ路か否かはともかく、彼も一族と呼応して起ち、中華の動乱の只中に身を投ずる仕儀と相成りました。
　礼と徳とによって多くの勇将・賢才を幕下に収めた秀君、一族の惣領たる劉玄の有力部将として徐々に頭角を現し、昆陽の戦いでは中国戦史上屈指ともいうべき空前の大勝利をおさめ、一族中における位置付けも格段に高まっていきます。しかし、勝利の美酒に酔いしれる間もなく、劉玄体制内の権力争いの中、秀君の一家も深刻な不幸と打撃を蒙ります。自身の身にも危険が及ぶ中、秀君はどこに活路を見出すのでしょうか。
　ことほど左様に、光武帝の人生はドラマチックなイベントに満ちています。本書は、そうした紆余曲折を大まかにフォローしているものの、例えば本巻で言えば、小長安の戦いや一族内訌のあたりなど、もう少し状況の深刻さをクッキリさせたほうが面白くなるのではないかと思いました。
　些かの不満も残りますが、小説という形で劉秀の治績を分かり易く紹介するという点では、やはり貴重で一読には値する本だと思います。
