特定の主人公を置くわけではなく、アメリカのハゲタカファンドの日本人社長と、経営破綻したスーパーを再建するために友人に請われて邦銀からスピンアウトしたスーパーの社長と、これも経営に行き詰まっているホテルを建て直そうとしている女社長の三者の生き様をそれぞれ描く独特のスタイル。三者とも金融問題に直面している、そして日本に対する高い愛国心を持っているという共通点があり、同時並行でそれぞれのストーリーが進んでいく中で、相互に影響し合う。バブル前後の日本経済の状況を忠実に描写し、また、実在の企業をモデルにしているので、ノンフィクション性の高いフィクションであると言える。バブル期の金融機関の経営やコンプライアンスがどれほど緩んでいたのか、バブル後の金融機関の貸しはがし、貸し渋りでどれだけ地方の中小企業が影響を被ったのかなどといったことについて、アウトサイダーとしてはこれまで実感が湧かなかったのだが、本書を読むと、そのあたりがかなり生々しく描写されており、知的好奇心が刺激されてついつい引き込まれてしまう。かなりの長編小説であるが、中だるみもなく、興味深く読ませてもらった。

どこまでがフィクションでどこまでが事実をベースにして書かれたのか判別が出来ないくらいに迫真の筋書きが続くこの下巻。上巻以上にエキサイティングな続きである。
本書を読んでいて思った。数年前に日本の長信銀や地銀が破綻後に外資系買収ファンドに買収されたが、何ゆえ破綻銀行は彼らのターゲットになったのか？また、ごく最近、外資系投資銀行や政府系機関が地方の温泉旅館を立て直しているが、現実の背後にある経済論理はなんなのか？こういったものがこの下巻では多く描かれている。私にとっては目から鱗だった。

さらにこの下巻では、主人公達の心理の奥底まで迫っていく。潰れかかった企業を再生させるといことがどういうことなのか、企業経営をするとはどういうことなのか、当事者達の心理の綾を交えながら語っている。

この過酷な物語に救いはあるのか？！最後はご自身の目で確認して欲しい。

　実際に日本で起こっている企業の「再生」「合併」「買収」など、きれい事ではすまないドライな経済競争・経済戦争が、自分のような素人にもピリピリしたせめぎ合いを実感できるほどに、丁寧に描かれています。
　特に、現実社会でも「ハゲタカ」として忌み嫌われている感のある「ファンド」が、何を目指し、どういう役割を果たしているのかが分かります。
　それを象徴する鷲津という存在が、下巻の途中以降、さまざまな思いや背景が明らかになる中で、浮き彫りになってくる課程が、読者の「ファンド」に対する理解と重なるのは当然でしょう。
