どん底に追い詰められた人々が、最後に出す決断。人生いろいろと思うけれど、ここまで堕ちてしまったとき、果たしてのし上がる道はあるんだろうか？
「ラストシュート」以外はすべて「お金」、それさえあればこんなことにはならなかったのに、という悲しい人間ばかりが登場する。それも、良くぞここまで落としたなぁ〜、というほどにみんながぎりぎりなのだ。温かいご飯、家族、当たり前のそんなものがものすごい幸福に思える。
そしてどれもが救いがない。ひたすら落ち込む本でしたが、誰もが目を背けたくなる社会の現実に真っ向から切り込んだ石田氏の意欲には脱帽で、星３つです。

読みながら、時折こみ上げてくるこの苦しさはなんなのだろうか？
そんなに苦痛になるなら、読まなければいい。
読むことから逃げたいのなら、いっそこの本を投げてしまえばいい。

……そう思うくらい、時々旨の奥底で骨がきしむような嫌な胸騒ぎ
を覚えた。

……逆にいうと、それくらい引きつけてくれる短編集ということに
なる。面白い、どこにどんでん返しが待っている？？？と、自分な
りにストーリーをつくりながら、物語を追いかけていっても、まっ
たく想像もしえなかった結末が待っている。これだからやめられな
くなる、癖になります。

ちょっとした小説という名の媚薬として、触れてみるのも面白いか
と……。
本読んでいて、逃げ出したくなる感覚なんて、そうそう味わえない
ですよ。

石田衣良の才能については充分認めつつも、個人的に「池袋ウエストゲートパーク」シリーズのあの文体にはちょっと違和感やあざとさを感じていた。しかしこの作品集『ＬＡＳＴ』にはすんなりと入ってゆけた。他の方が指摘しているように、内容は確かに暗いものかもしれない。しかし、小説として考えれば、読んでいる最中はスリリングで、読後はなにかしら余韻が残る。「今」を描いた傑作だと思う。
