触覚、嗅覚、味覚まで実際に体験できるヴァーチャルリアリティ・システム『クライン２』の製作に関わることになった彰彦。テストプレイヤーとして参加していくが…。
あまり作品のネタバレはしたくないのだが、内容としては崩れ行く自我、自己が描かれている。岡嶋二人名義ではあるが、実質的には（現ＰＮ）井上夢人が一人で書いていたらしいが、確かにこのテーマ自体は、『メドゥサ、鏡をごらん』であるとか、『プラスティック』であるとかに通ずるものがある。既に、井上夢人の作風というものが出来上がっていた、ということをこの作品を読むと感じることができる。
この作品が書かれたのが８９年。「ゲームブック」という単語であるとかに時代を感じる部分がないわけではないのだが、文章自体に古臭さを感じることはない。むしろ、まだファミコンソフトが最新のゲーム機であったようなこの時代に、実体験できるゲーム機、というアイデアで作品が描かれた先見性に脱帽せざるを得ない。
現在でも十分に楽しめる作品だと思う。

メビウスの輪を知ったのは、小学５年生のときだった。
紙には表と裏がある。わざわざことばにしなくとも、そんなことわかっていた。
では、その表と裏をつなげたらどうなるのだろう。
表も裏もなくなってしまう、という先生の説明はしっくりこなかった。
表だけになってしまった。そっちの方がしっくりきた。
だけど、表が裏を殺した、表が裏を食べてしまったようでこわかった。

クラインの壺という空間のイメージはよくわかりません。
この本を読んで沸いたイメージは、むしろ、
メビウスの輪を平行に並べ、その間を行き来するような世界です。
この小説で、表や裏を提示する必要はないと思います。
自我を持ってしまうと、もう自我のない世界には戻れない。
それと同じように、
一度入ったらもう戻れない世界、それがクラインの壺。
主人公も読者もいっしょ。だから、ホラーとは一味違う恐怖が沸いてくる。
ＲＰＧが味だから。

僕は自分がいる方が表で、自分が進む方が前だと思っているつもりです。

私が小学生の時にドラマ化もされていました、確か９４年くらいで、まだインターネットもごく一部の人間しか知らないような時代にこの作品は衝撃的でした。

作品自体は８９年と言う事で非常に先見性の有る作品です。

この作品のドラマ版は青春ドラマシリーズと言う事で設定が少し違いますがそのふわふわした恐怖感に引き込まれると思います。
