東京都生まれ。慶応義塾大学文学部人間関係学科卒業。1995年「ジャンボジェットの飛ぶ街で」が講談社児童文学新人賞佳作となる。1996年に『ぼくらのサイテーの夏』(講談社)でデビュー。同作品で第30回日本児童文学者協会新人賞、第26回児童文芸新人賞を受賞。2003年『楽園のつくりかた』(講談社)で第50回産経児童出版文化賞を受賞した(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

もうこの本は最高に面白いです！！
私が初めて読んだ笹生さんの本はこれなのですが、
すっかりファンになりました。
一度図書館で借りて読み、其れからいつでも読める様にと、文庫本を買いました。

主人公が、怪我と掃除と栗田くんを通して、少しずつ大人になっていく様子が、丁寧に描かれた作品です。

また、主人公の桃井くんだけでなく、周りの人たちも好転していくのがわかりました。

そして何より、桃井くんが凄く純粋で、微笑ましいです。
最初はなんとも思っていなかった栗田くんのことを、「かっこいい」と思えたり、「夜が好きだ」と素直に言えたり…

感受性も豊かで、読後感が、非常に良い作品です。
終わり方も工夫されていて、何度読んでも飽きません！！オススメ！！

主人公桃井と栗田、ふたりの友情が育まれていくひと夏を描いた物語。決して恵まれた環境にないふたりだが、お互いを理解することで、かけがえのない存在になっていく。読後感は爽快でやさしい気持ちに浸れました。世の中にはまだまだいい本があるんだなぁ（感心）文庫化によってこういう本に巡り合えたことをしあわせに思います。

小学６年生の夏。終業式のあとにある騒動があって、通称桃井こと、「ぼく」は「４０日間プールそうじ」という罰を受けてしまったんだ。もうひとりのパートナーは栗田という奴で、よく知らない奴なんだけれど、うわさにやたらと詳しいカバちゃんのハナシを聞くと、なんだか余計わからなくなっちゃう。これまた上手いこといえないけれど、ぼくは栗田の奴を嫌っていた。プールそうじの昼休憩のときも別々に弁当を食べているんだ。あいつは三日ボーズでさぼるかな、と思ったら、約束の時間に遅刻しないで毎日やって来る。変な対抗意識を持っちゃって、あいつより早くプールに行こうと、ぼくも毎日プール通いを続けているんだ。実はさ･･･。この後は読んでのお楽しみ。一夏の間にぐわんぐわん成長する少年を見ていると、思わず笑みがこぼれつつ遠い目で「あの頃」を見つめてしまう･･･そんな（どんな？）傑作小説です。
