　藤沢作品は市井もの、武家もの、歴史ものの３つのジャンルに分けられ、それぞれおもしろいのですが、普通、これらのジャンルは１つの作品の中で交わることがありません。
　この作品では、犯罪をめぐって、町人も武家も出てきて、おまけにそんなに長くない、ということで１冊に藤沢作品のエッセンスがつまっています。
　それと、この手の犯罪小説では、登場人物のその後が取って付けたようなものになりがちですが、この作品は、納得できる終わり方でした。
　昭和５１年に書かれた作品なのに決して古くなっていない。すでに古典となっているといってもいいと思います。

読ませる作品である。
といっても、藤沢作品はどれも読ませるんだけれど。
この作品には、５人の主人公がいて、
それぞれの終わり方を迎えるのであるが、
その終わり方に、藤沢周平の揺れ動く心が現れている気がしてならない。


４０代も半ばを過ぎれば、ほぼ人生の先が読めてくるが、
いったい自分はこのうちの誰のパターンを望むだろうと考えると深い小説である。

藤沢周平氏は２８歳の愛妻をガンで看取ったとき、自分の人生もいっしょに終わったと思ったのだという。しかし乳児がいたので死ぬことも出来ず、屈折した想いを小説にぶつけていった。氏は優しいので、自分の思いをストレートに出すことはせず、エンターテイメント小説として読ませる工夫を怠らなかった。氏の初期の作品群には、闇の中に自ら落ちていきたい想いと、市井の人々が希望や小さな幸せを抱えながら必死に生きていく様と、読ませる工夫に満ちたサスペンスや仕掛けが、いつも緊張感をもって同居していた。その時々でどちらかに比重は傾くのだけど。

この作品は、自らの想いを闇の歯車として動く四人に投影している。藤沢作品の中でも『重たさ』は際立っているだろう。特に武士の伊黒がいっしょにかけ落ちをした妻を見取る場面に私は胸が潰れた。｢四半刻ほど、伊黒は凝然と死者の顔を見まもった。心の中に、私は悔やんではおりません、という静江の声が鳴りひびいた。そして伊黒は、その声とひびきあう自分の歔欷の声を聞いていた。」声無き声で啜り泣く伊黒の姿が氏の姿に重なる。
