どの短編も面白かったが最も印象的だったのは表題作の「アームストロング砲」。倒幕側の諸藩で藩主が主導権を握って政治・行政・軍事を進めた藩は極めて少なかったが、その貴重な好例として佐賀藩のことを興味深く読んだ。アームストロング砲が佐賀藩でどのように設計・開発され、彰義隊壊滅のためにどのように運用されたかについても詳しい。

表題作を含む9編を収録した作品で、後半に向かうにつれておもしろく感じました。
その中のひとつ「侠客万助珍談」は同作者の作品「俄―浪華遊侠伝」の基になった短編で、主人公の侠客・鍵屋万助（モデルは大阪の侠客小林佐兵衛）の金儲けにかける辛抱強さと発想が見ものです。
「斬ってはみたが」は剣の道、達人の境地に対してある剣客が悩む姿を通して、剣の道だけでは無く様々の道の到達点がどういうものなのか普遍的な事が描かれているような気がしました。
「理心流異聞」は沖田総司が主役の話ですが、他の話でもちょくちょく新撰組が出てきますので「燃えよ剣」や「新撰組血風録」を読んだ方はこちらも読んでみてはいかがでしょうか。
表題作の「アームストロング砲」は同作者の作品「酔って候」でも取り上げられた佐賀藩の、西洋装備に対する勤勉、執心ぶりがある秀才を発狂させてしまい刃傷事件が起き、
そうしてようやく完成した砲や海軍組織などの近代的機構のおかげで、それまでひたすら力を蓄えて中立を保っていた佐賀藩が一躍新政府の雄藩となったというのは興趣深いの一言です。

これに収録されている「おお、大砲」は、司馬先生の短篇作品の中でも１、２を争うおもしろさを持った短篇という印象を受けた。

東照大権現（家康）に購入され、大阪の陣で活躍したがゆえに、奈良高取藩で神格化され、どんな官吏にも崇敬されていた「ブリキトース」なる大砲４門。

幕末そのうちの１門の大砲方（大砲の整備士、管理者、砲戦の戦闘部隊長）に、ひょんな因果から、就任することになった主人公は、大和五条を占領し、高取に攻めてきた天誅組に対し、そのブリキトースで砲撃を喰らわす。

そのときの天誅組がちりぢりになる原因、さらに残りの３門のブリキトースの沈黙がおもしろい。

主人公は、悟った。２５０年前から神のように信じきってきたものが、結局は、時代の波に取り残されていたことを。

最後に感じるのは、悲壮感というより、滑稽感の方が、はるかに高いが、この主人公の心の中で、江戸時代の象徴が、維新に遷ってゆく時流の中で、崩れていくところを、まことにうまく表している作品と言える。

この「おお、大砲」を読んだ後、最新鋭の大砲開発に命をかけた佐賀藩士の話・表題作の「アームストロング砲」を読まれると、また興趣と感慨がわいてくるでしょう。
