「風の歌を聴け」「1973年のピンボール」とともに、俗に「三部作」と呼ばれる小説の3作目。前二作を先に読まないと半分も楽しめません。

「風の歌を聴け」に出てくる主人公「僕」とその親友「鼠」。この二人がとても魅力的な人物で、彼らへの思い入れこそがこの三部作を楽しむ上で最も重要になります。あの二人は文学史に残るアイドルになるかもしれない。夏目漱石の「坊ちゃん」みたいに。二人は「風の歌を聴け」で20歳前後、「1973年のピンボール」で25歳前後。「羊をめぐる冒険」で30歳となります。20歳、25歳の彼らとともに青春の苦悩を味わい、”ジェイズバー”でビールを飲み、それぞれの恋をし、バーテンの「ジェイ」と会話を楽しんだ過去があってこそ、30歳の彼らが遭遇する苦難と冒険にのめりこむことが出来るわけです。「風の歌を聴け」と「1973年のピンボール」に関しては、僕の場合、部分的に20回以上読み返しています。暗記している場面すらあります。小説を読み返すタイプではないんですが、この二作は別です。短いですし。

「羊をめぐる冒険」は探偵小説のように謎を追うストーリーです。探偵小説と青春小説を混ぜ合わせたような小説。ドラマチックな場面も多い。三部作の中でも特に人気の高い作品です。前二作と違って整ったストーリーと緻密なプロット、構成の巧みさをも楽しめます。特に終盤がいい。

ついでに言うと、この続編として「ダンス・ダンス・ダンス」という小説がありますが、こちらはこの「羊をめぐる冒険」に出てきた人物が中心になります。つまり人気シリーズなんですね。

すごい作品です。村上氏の作品は全てまだ読破していませんが、いままで読んだ中で、一番好きです。よくわからなかった所もありますが、深いコメントが、ところどころにちりばめられています。読んだあと、車で夜、逗子のあたりのバーへ入って、ピーナツと葡萄ジュースが飲みたくなりました。

　この「羊をめぐる冒険」では、「風の歌を聴け」、「1973年のピンボール」では詳しく描かれなかった、主人公「ぼく」と友人「鼠」の性格や特徴が詳細に書かれ、物語としても引き込まれる仕立てとなっています。

　まるで、音楽を聴くかのように、小説の言葉がはいってきます。

　羊探しの旅のなかで発見する、様々な出来事。それぞれが紡ぎあい小説を、深く味わいのあるものに仕立てています。
